Automated offside

The Ref Stop
Might we move to feet, then this would be given on-side,
I'd be ok with that if feet were the only body part you could score with. But for now shoulders count.

Also, agree that it seems harsh being called offside by 2mm. Assuming this tech has taken margin of error into account already, there has to be a cut off. If we make that cut off 20mm then 21mm will be harsh. So I'd say this offside was pretty fair.

I am not too fond of VAR either but this has very little VAR involvement.

Bar goal line technology, I don’t like any of it. But this is what people asked for. Someone is either offside, or they aren’t.

So my sympathy is close to non-existent!

I guess we’ll have to get used to these given offside, I’m sure original law makers viewed offside as gaining an advantage, IMHO this forensic analysis just chalks goals & excitement off. (A non VAR enthusiast).

Might we move to feet, then this would be given on-side, but probably only in matches with this technology?
Original? OS also used to require three defenders to be onside, which make this easily off. And for after it changed to two defenders, even was off, again making this easily off.

As @one observes, it doesn’t matter where the line is, there will always be calls just barely on either side of that line. Discussion about calls being too close and a reason for change are simply nonsensical for that reason. The real discussion should be whether it would be better to let attackers get slightly past defenders or whether that change the ways that defenses have to play that would have a negative effect on the game.

I'm pretty sure the original law makers didn't think in those terms. In the original laws of 1863, anyone who was in front of the ball was in offside position. (As alluded to by @socal lurker that changed to needing only three defenders fairly early on, in 1865).

The phrase "gaining an advantage" (actually, "seeking to gain an advantage") didn't come into use until 1938.

Mine is completely non-existent, not just close to. Football wanted technology, football has technology, now football has decided it doesn't like the outcomes that technology has created. Bad luck, they need to be careful what they wish for.
Be careful what you wish for applies to both football and other things in the world right now.

I think the arms are natural position. Just look at the body head and feet. Its a little bit unnecessary to highlight every part of the player.
