The Ref Stop

4G/Astro

I just spoke to my physio about this whilst she was putting my compression boots on (yes, I am injured again 😒). She works with professional football clubs and says the physios there hate the 3G pitches and advise the managers and coaches to only use them when training or playing on grass isn't an option. She said there is clear evidence that there are many more cases of shin splints these days, especially in youth players, when they regularly play and train on 3G.

Whilst I agree the modern top level pitches are firmer than they used to be, there is still way more give in them than even the very best 3G. I've been lucky enough to referee at both Wembley and The Emirates, and it was like running on air, the grass is so lush you have so much cushioning. Equally I've refereed on Hackney Marshes where you never know where the next divot is coming from.

I don't know what it is that causes my DOMS after 3G pitches but I certainly don't feel it has anything to do with firmness, as I run approx 50km a week on concrete specialist foam which doesn't give me any issues at all.
Corrected and answered for you. 🙂

A metastudy from the U.S. National institutes of Health publication database: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35593739/

Bottom line (and in my personal experience. over 25 yrs): Artificial turf is a big problem, especially as you get older; knees, shins, and achilles and ankles, but especially knees.

Hokas saved me, and allowed me to come back onto the pitch after severe shin splints and an Achilles injury. I'm 75, but since I switched to the Hokas, I feel half that age on the pitch.

Hoka don't make ref shoes specifically, but they have a model for virtually any surface and some are available in black. The Challenger 7 is worth a look, assuming you all have the same model names in the UK. The Speedgoat is usually available in black as well. Not cheap, but...
I danced for 4 hours at the office Xmas on Friday on wide Challenger 7s - without metatarsal pain. A small miracle and enduring image. Love them. I wear the Clifton wides for refereeing as they are designed to take weight off the metatarsal pad and work amazing for me. Big fan here.
