    Interesting observation

I had an observation report come back from Saturday and there are a few things which are interesting. The observer said that my pre match instructions need to be clearer to my AR’s and particularly to whose responsibility it is in which half of the pitch. However, he wasn’t there when I...

    Observer attire

I am observing my first game tomorrow and was wondering what attire is best ? I’ve seen some observers dressed in sports tracksuits and some dressed in what you may consider smart casual. Odd question I know, but I don’t want to be incorrectly dressed ! 😂

    Penalty shootouts

I seem to have had some….odd.. moments in penalty shootouts this season. I was in the middle for a county level u23 game (league cup) a few months ago and penalties were taken and I blew to end the shootout early (realising very quickly I had made a mistake and we still needed a penalty to be...

    Clampdown?

I was watching an isthmian game earlier and there was an offside which was given and that player passed it and then the other player shot over the bar. No caution and not even a word. Are we still clamping down on kicking the ball away, etc ?

    Human error

I had an interesting game last night. It was county level u23’s and I was in the middle. It finished with 8 yellows and a straight red. Unfortunately, I dropped an absolute howler. In the 63rd minute, a tackle went in. It was two footed and completely out of control and about 2 foot...

    Tolerance level too high?

I’ve been reflecting over the past season and it’s been picked up more than once that my tolerance level for dissent is high. I am just wondering what your thoughts are. Generally, for a ‘f*ck off’ in my direction, I give a sin bin (or yellow card if no sin bins apply). ‘What the f*ck are...

    IFAB

IFAB have just put out a tweet saying that they have a new website called ‘rules of the game’ and also called them rules multiple times in their tweet. I have always avoided calling them rules as I thought it was strictly laws!

    EA Sports

Looks like the EA sports logo is changing on the side of the referees’ shirts. One of the EFL Referees has just posted on Instagram all the new shirts for this season in a box and all the EA sports logos look different.

    EURO 24 Belarus vs Israel

The PGMOL have just put out a tweet saying that Jarred Gillet is leading a team of 6 PGMOL officials. Michael Salisbury is the 4th official? I didn’t think he was FIFA Listed? Or have I got this wrong? I thought you had to be FIFA listed to do any international matches?

    A&H Notebook

I have been wondering for a while where I can find a certain notebook. It’s from A&H which have obviously closed down. It’s quite a long notebook. It is a bit longer than most normal notebooks and I’ve worked with a couple of referees who have had it recently and I want to get my hands on one...

    Half yellow card?

I was watching an isthmian game last Saturday and the home dugout were getting a little noisy. Nothing bad. The referee stopped play when the ball was out and walked over and half took his yellow card out of his pocket. He did it and pointed at it. Basically as if to ‘threaten’ them with a...

    Surprising game

So I went back to my old secondary school yesterday for a game. It was year 10 (u15) (I am year 12 so would play in the u17 age group) and it was an interesting game. School games are usually not difficult to referee and very few cards usually. This was totally different. 2 yellows, 3 reds...

    Women's championship

Hi all, I’m on the promotion for 4W to 3W on the womens pathway this season. 2W = Women's championship. 1W = Women's super league It is Level 2W you get all the comms kit and vanishing spray, EA sports etc? There’s a referee in my county who is a level 2B on the mens and 2W on the...

    Tongue boots

Does anyone have any tricks on how to keep the tongue on your boots down? Mine seem to come off the Velcro after a little while running about during games (and sometimes during the warm up) and it’s very annoying. Thanks

    Masking tape in the rain?

Has anyone used masking tape over their yellow cards in the rain and used a sharpie? Does it work? I don’t think my card skins will work with a sharpie and I don’t really like using my notebook. I’ve got county u18’s tomorrow so reliable team sheets. Thanks all

    New Kit- Orange

Just seen that the ref stop have released the new Nike referee orange shirt. I was told ( I can’t remember where) that the orange shirts were only for National list, SG2 and SG1 officials. Hence why you couldn’t find the orange shirt anywhere before now. Anyone got any clue?

    Rain

Has anyone got any tips for officiating in the rain? I was running the line today at a step 7 game (club AR technically) and was going to record the game on my Spintso S1 Pro watch but it was raining a lot during the ‘warm up’ and just before we kicked off and it wouldn’t turn on. This happened...

    Leeds vs Man City

Stuart Atwell in the middle and not a single card yet. I am slightly surprised. I thought that there were quite a few tackles which could have been cautions. The commentator just said he doesn’t mind it as long as he’s consistent because he thought there should have been some cards. Anyone else...

    Watches telling me different things

Morning all, Whilst officiating, I wear a Apple Watch using refsix on my left wrist, and a Spintso S1 Pro watch on my right. I’ve noticed this for a while- they both tell me that I ran different amounts during games and I’m not sure which one is more accurate. For example, I did a step 5 game...
