    DFK taker moves the ball

I gave a DFK 25 yards out. I tell the attacker to wait for my whistle. I count out 10 yards for the wall and a defender says "he's moved the ball". So I pace back out from the wall to the ball and the attacker has moved the ball forward 2 yards. Caution for USB? Restart?

Jewellery - when did it change?

How long ago was it that the Law 4 was changed such that you could no longer wear jewellery taped up, it had to come off? Reason I ask is that I'm virtually certain some of the players who pretend not to know they can't tape it up were born after that change.

    Age restrictions for ARs

I know that referees under the age of 16 can only referee age groups 2 years or more below them. Is there a similar limit for being an AR?

    How windy is too windy?

I'm on friendly tomorrow involving teams from step 5 which is higher than I would normally do during the season. It's on a 4G surface. It's forecast to be 45mph winds. I have heard a rule of thumb that if the ball will not stay still you shouldn't play. Aside from the very obvious question of...

    LOTG 2023/24

Two quick questions on LOTG 2023/24: 1. When were they first published? 2. Do they still do a printed edition?

Caution for excessive celebration of a goal that is subsequently ruled out

So if a player is cautioned for excessive celebration of a goal and the goal is ruled out, does the caution get recinded?

Open Age Double-foul: pen or DFK?

This happened in my game today. Attacker making progress towards the goal, defender chasing. Just outside the area there's a shoulder into the back which unbalances the attacker. I'm raising my whistle to my mouth, I'm not going to blow immediately in case the attacker rides the challenge and...

    Playing advantage following SFP

A striker shoots. While the ball is still in play the GK commits a foul on him which is SFP. The ball goes into the goal. Can you play advantage, award the goal, and then dismiss the GK?

Dissent while in the sin bin

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find it, and the FA guidance I can find is a bit ambiguous. Apologies for the repetition. A player in the sin bin commits a further act of dissent. What's the procedure?

Changing your mind on card colour

This happened to me on Saturday. Very wet conditions, a lot of sliding tackles, nothing naughty, and a relaxed match. A sliding tackle goes in, one-footed, studs showing, arrives late, some contact, player stays on his feet. The defender apologises immediately. I issue a caution. No...

    IDFK after contact

A long time ago when I was being observed I awarded an IDFK for "playing in a dangerous manner". It was a classic high foot. There was very light contact with the opponent, but I didn't think it merited being called a kick or trip. My observer told me it can't be indirect if there's contact...

    Lightening

A 9-year-old was killed last year during a training session having been struck by lightening. I can see a fair bit of reasonably consistent advice from elsewhere in the world regarding what to do if there's lightening during football: if there's less then 30 seconds between the lightening and...

Leeds vs Arsenal: a lot to unpack here

I'm guessing most people here won't have seen the game yet, but you'll want to record MOTD. All sorts of officiating questions. Penalty given against Arsenal after a VAR check for handball. (Nailed on HB.) But was an offside missed in the buildup? Does VAR check for offsides in the buildup to a...

    Up-to-date mini soccer rules

The only official documents from the FA that I can find on this seem to be very out of date, I'm looking specifically for - the updated guidance on ball sizes per age group - whether at U9/10 goal kick with a retreat line the ball is live when it moves or when it leaves the PA I've got the...

    FA Vase - dress code?

I've been given a line on (what I assume is) a preliminary round of the FA Vase. Home team plays at Step 5. What's the dress code? Do I need jacket & tie?

Referee -> VAR conversations to be broadcast post match in the PL

Interesting. I'd certainly watch them. https://lookcharms.com/premier-league-wants-to-broadcast-conversations-between-referee-and-var/ Also the Times but behind a paywall: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mike-dean-let-fans-listen-to-referees-conversation-with-var-95c99tsck

AR briefing: "Split the pitch into thirds"

"We'll do the usual, split the pitch into thirds, you lead in your third." I've heard this several times in referee's briefings and never understood what "my third" of the pitch is supposed to be. Can a referee who uses this please explain?

    Goalkeeper handball question

A goalkeeper is guilty of a handball offence if he handles the ball outside the penalty area. The ball is inside the penalty area if any part of the ball is over any part of the PA line. (Is that right?) So it's possible for a GK to handle a ball legally with his hand outside the PA (so long...
