    VC or C1 (AA)

Recent match incident. I was on the line with a clear view of what happened. Green team trying to run down the clock at end of game. Green player gives away a FK and then, briefly, picks up the ball, starts jogging back and lobs ball to White team (not a clever thing to do but we've all seen...

Forgive me Refchat, for I (may) have sinned ....

Last 15 seconds of a recent Step 6 game. Up to this point, good natured, good banter, three cards all for 'professional' C1s ie deliberately breaking up promising attacks. Recently introduced substitute lunges for ball in a clearly reckless fashion. Takes it without any contact with the...

FAO Padfoot ... the reply I couldn't send!

So do enlighten us, oh ultimate arbiter of what I "should" find offensive ... which of these words should I be red carding for? Sh#t, Pi#s, Fu#k, Bolloc#s, Tw#t, Co#k etc etc etc etc?? And in a world where it's widely accepted that 80% of communication is non verbal, how on earth can we judge...

Open Age Really Unsure What To Do ....

So, incident in a Sunday County Cup game. Long ball played over the top of a defence holding a high line. Keeper comes out (obviously been watching the sweeper keepers in the Prem :hmmm:) and commits a careless, unintentional foul on the lone attacker who has controlled the ball. Foul is 30...

One down, four to go .....

Got in early and had my first 5 to 4 assessment last weekend. Reckon the 25 degree heat gave me a decent shout at demonstrating my fitness at least but was a bit of a gamble as this was my first middle at Step 6. Started with a 73 which I'm pretty happy with. Keeps me in the game at least...

We might as well give up the fight right now ....

Seen on the wall in the officials' dressing room at a leading Premiership ground ... was there reffing a corporate match tonight.

    Liverpool v Man Utd

That Mark Clattenburg fella's not half bad at this refereeing lark. Reckon he'll go far ....:)

    And ........ relax :)

Final 6 to 5 assessment completed today ... hoorah! Will be nice to have a couple of months with no filling in of match detail forms and where I'm slightly less concerned about weather postponements . For what it's worth, few observations from me coming out of the ones I received...

The Respect campaign gets teeth ....

Not sure if others of you have picked up on this but clubs will now face some pretty significant sanctions if their players / officials are regularly picking up dissent / OFFINABUS cards or misconduct reports. Nice to see the FA putting their money (or at least the clubs' money!) where their...

For those who in the past have advocated a referee 'strike' ....

    Junior/Youth U18 Cup Final

Sensible game management or 'bottling it' ... you decide Half an hour in to the last ever match for both of these U18 teams. Blues score a contentious offside goal to take a 2-0 lead. I'm fully backing my NAR who's in a perfect position to give the (non) decision. Red keeper starts to mouth...

US Interpretation of Updated Offside Law

For my taste, I reckon our American cousins have got these three aspects of this Law spot on - really helpful clarification to the most problematic of areas. Other thoughts / views?

Considering starting to referee Womens Open Age matches .. any views?

Now that my son is stopping his football career (in favour of the egg shaped game!), I will have more flexibility next season with how I spend my time on Sundays. I'm not keen on the idea of more Mens OA leagues, so I'm weighing up the pros and cons of Mens County Cup matches vs County /...

Tottenham v West Ham - West Ham second goal

Offside or not offside??? Emotionally, feels like he HAS to be offside because his jumping to try and head the ball clearly distracts both Danny Rose and Lloris. But by the strict LOTG, the only valid reason I could muster to flag it would be if he obstructed Rose's view of the ball as it...

Open Age Couple of questions to ponder ...

Folks, two incidents in my match today that gave me pause for thought and on which I'd welcome your advice. Firstly, free kick to Greens, deep in their own half but with the possibility of getting it upfield quicky for a counter attack. Blue attacker deliberately curves and dramatically slows...

Did a miss a yellow when giving a red??

Greens v Reds on Saturday. Nothing game with no cards until 80th minute when a Green sub's first tackle is a reckless one. Response from tackled Red player is to stand up and push him in the chest. Shout out 'stay there Red number 7' while I caution Green player for the tackle. Go back to Red...

Positioning - Help & Thoughts Please

Folks, would welcome some guidance and points of view with regard to improving my positioning .. especially with regard to play that develops after goal kicks. I start well positioned (I think!) ang get a good side-on view of the initial challenge, sandwiching the play and players between...

Throw in from too close to your own goal

Interested in others' opinions as to when / if / how you would stop the game for a throw incorrectly taken from too near your own goal rather than the oppositions? By law this seems no different to trying to steal yards up the pitch but just doesn't feel the same. That said, this is sometimes...

    Junior/Youth Threatening Language

Was an assistant at an U11 game last weekend. After a disputed incident, one player from each side started arguing the toss .. then one said to the other "You better shut up or I'll put you in A&E" I informed the ref of this, he had a strong word with the offending player but then left it at...
