    Add a technology section

Technology in football continuously evolves, improving the overall experience for everyone over time. Think things like HD, UHD, HDR TV transmission, goal line tech, offside detection, the list goes on and on. For our corner of the internet, we're most interested where it impacts reffing, which...

    How semi-automated VAR offside works

Unsurprisingly, it's quite complex, uses AI to make its decisions and still requires the human touch to finish the job. https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/39920409/premier-league-semi-automated-var-offside-all-need-know

    SCO HUN

I think I'm with everyone here in wishing Hungarian player Barnabas Varga a speedy recovery from his awful injury this evening with the game against Scotland. It still hasn't been reported in what way he was injured, but it's clearly quite serious...

    Tossing of the Coin

    Improbable, captain.

    Tossing of the Coin

And don't forget that the coin isn't pefectly symmetrical and weighted, either. The fact it has different designs on each side makes that inevitable regardless of any other factor. The differences are small though.

    Tossing of the Coin

I like it. The FinalWhistle approvez. 😎

    Tossing of the Coin

Oh yes, quite. Pitches tend to be in much better condition nowadays at the big stadiums.

    Tossing of the Coin

It could land edge on in soft mud. Now that would be interesting lol.

    Tossing of the Coin

It's a subtle difference, but makes the picking up of the coin just a post process "tidying up" exercise rather than part of the process which might make for a small psychological difference, perhaps. And the FW approvez of this boring thread.😎

Make the Forum Rules easier to find

Sweet, but naughty for resurrecting an old thread! Oh, hang on, it's my one. 😛

    Scotland v Switzerland

Ok thankyou. In that case, why was it ever awarded as an own goal I wonder. As you say, this is simplified, so I wonder how they worked it out. I find reffing situations like this fascinating and that's why I'm a member here. 🙂

    Scotland v Switzerland

I see that the own goal by Schar at 12 minutes got changed to a McTominay goal, but I can't see the logic of that. McTominay's shot was on target, but was going to pass fairly close to the keeper, who might well have saved it. However, Schar's attempt to stop the ball with his foot massively...

    GER v SCO - Euro 24

I like the quick offside decisions with the new technology. Big improvement.

VAR voted 19-1 to continue for next season, but with improvements

I'm in favour of VAR since improving decision accuracy is critical despite a few high profile gaffs, so I'm happy with this decision. Here's a couple of articles on this decision...

    CAR’s

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, but I do have an observation: in some ways, the higher level reffing where they have VAR I would say is easier, since you have technology to help you out and you don't have to rely on people's honesty about situations. There is of course, lots of pressure...

    One bad observer down…

Oh yeah, being freelance they have zero responsibility towards him anyway and owe him nothing, so he's definitely not coming back from this now. He's tainted goods. One can't just say racist crap like this in this day and age.

    One bad observer down…

Thanks for the clarification, JamesL. How stuff like that can ever be considered not abusive or insulting is beyond me. I get laddish humour when friends make insulting jokes to each other that they laugh off, but racism is a red line that should never be crossed.

    One bad observer down…

That sounds like a case of "casual racism" to me and it's probably likely that he didn't mean it maliciously, as he's claimed. However, it's still just as unacceptable as "regular" racism said with bad intent though, so they can't be soft on it, especially for a second offence. Such a stupid and...

First game yesterday - felt like walking away

Oh man, walk away, not worth getting your head kicked in over this with potentially life changing injuries. They sound like a bunch of thugs, not a football team. Definitely report it and add as much detail as possible.
