I was also pleased to see Jonathan Wilks being promoted to L2. He has been a L3 for quite a few years & was mentored/coached by the late Gary Willard, whereby if he was still around, he would have been over the moon.

I don’t really have a problem with KH, especially since his view is also subjective based upon years of experience, but to say HW is not fit for purpose for what was a subjective decision was unfair & inappropriate for the positions he has held in the past and that he holds now.

He also had it in for Mike Riley with the connection being clear - both held/hold the position he once had. He has also gone sour on HW after he was hoping for better things, especially since HW became a PL Referee on his watch (I think).

If it is ZKK, then he has had a quick rise to where he is. What I can say is that I have Observed him as a L4 & L2 and the improvement seen from a raw L4 to L2 was the difference between night & day. He listens & takes on board the information like a sponge - though only adopts what he believes...

The period since Jan 2021 includes Covid, but I get your point, though the trials have been extended to other county FA’s/competitions & likely to grow further, perhaps to all, though with the costs involved it’s perhaps not a surprise the FA had to roll them out over a period of time.

Referees get in the neck whatever they do - he gave a brave caution (often criticised for not making their own mind up), but then as you say VAR probably had to intervene. However, could the Referee not just have said not sufficient/minimal contact & therefore no penalty!

Any player at the receiving end of VC can refer the issue to the police, but if the incident is seen on-line & especially when it goes viral as in this case, then the police are likely to intervene anyway. It does help, but not a 100% requirement if at least one of the officials identifies the...
