    Whistles

I used the Sonik Blast for a few months and I genuinely think it’s affected my ears. It’s such a shrill sound and I noticed my hearing ‘crackles’ at certain harsh sounds now. I’m convinced it’s because of its shrill tone. Now use the Fox 40 which generally sounds good. Still getting used to it...

    England v Denmark

Yellow would’ve been justified and helped match control imo. Then the yellow on Phillips was incredibly harsh

    Mass melee - fan footage

Good decisions, seen this on social media today and wondered what cards were given. Especially hard as it’s by the hoardings with CARs! Separately - I really don’t understand why certain leagues don’t allow referees to wear alt colours. I’ve found myself almost always wearing alt colours...

Most annoying reaction to correct decisions

Had the same yesterday in U18s. Played one of my best advantages ever, he passed it to a teammate who missed from 10 yards out. He moaned he should’ve got a free kick. 15 mins later and the same player gets tripped on the edge of his own box, I immediately blow for a defensive FK and he started...

    Abused... By a fellow ref

Ironically, I called mine off on Saturday and one of the players was a qualified ref (I actually think it was true in this case) and was on my side saying it’s a good decision to call off 😁

    Junior/Youth Should I book manager

Context is important, but try and speak to the manager first and if they don’t listen, use your cards. I’d definitely be having a strong word (or cautioning, depending on context like how loudly it was said, etc) after that comment about knowing the home team, as it’s questioning your integrity

A lighter thread - Your favourite decisions?

Had this a few weeks ago. Advantage led to a goal, got some 'cheers ref's... 10 minutes later, I'd sent off their keeper and apparently I didn't know the LOTG... 🤷‍♂️

    Junior/Youth Finding Games (SFA)

Yeah, I did that too and it definitely works! Hope you find some!

    Junior/Youth Finding Games (SFA)

This was the first time I had used Twitter to find friendlies and I ended up getting so many offers that I couldn’t do them all. So many clubs ask for referees on Twitter, so I’d start looking on there. Also helps to get yourself familiar with the clubs you’ll be refereeing throughout the...

    Pitchside Refs - Appointment software

I use it and it’s very useful. I do wish everything could be done on one system - it can get hard to track everything when you’re on MOAS, Pitchside and Google calendar!

    Taking a knee

I assume it’s because, as it’s a statement, all eyes are on the game at kick off. Just a guess anyway

    Academy Fixtures Restart

One of our CFA employees said that they’ve been speaking to the local academy (category 1), but didn’t mention anything else. I’d imagine they’d be back in training soon and maybe games to start in the next few weeks

    Taking a knee

Fair enough, thanks for the reply! Very surprising that someone would complain about it

    Taking a knee

I personally wouldn’t have a problem with it and would certainly participate. Genuinely curious - who said you couldn’t wear a poppy? When I played, we used to wear a poppy every remembrance weekend but didn’t think we, as referees, wouldn’t be allowed to. Do the EFL & Prem refs wear poppies?

    Passback restart

Need to think about game management. Something like this could definitely lead to an ‘easy’ game becoming a really tough one. Delaying the FK could cause one or two players to slightly moan (“come on ref”), but allowing a quick one where the keeper isn’t ready could lead to the entire team...

    Socially distanced checking of equipment

I was also thinking this. I’ve always checked them just in case and also because I think it’s the norm. When I played, a ‘kit check’ was always a boot check more than anything. When I say I’m going to do a kit check, the first thing players do is show their studs. In my 12 years of playing and...

    Socially distanced checking of equipment

I think from 2m you’ll be able to see studs fine. I think it’ll be harder to spot certain jewellery especially if they’re purposely trying to cover up, knowing you can’t get close
