    Referee Retention - Open Letter

Well then maybe it’s time grassroots football does go then. If there is no point trying to change things then why bother at all? although I do agree that any changes need to come from the top I.e the EPL down, and we know they won’t.

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

Not necessarily, why would the clubs fold instead of just getting rid of or control of the troublemakers? Would people rather have no football, than stop abusing match officials?

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

Possibly, but I don’t think they are intended to be broadcast on the 9 o’clock news, more for disseminating amongst local leagues etc where the lack of referees will be felt the most. I agree that we won’t be seeing anything change very much.

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

I wonder how many referees would be willing to do that every week for the remainder of the season.

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

True, the problem is that this (abuse of match officials) is a cultural thing. This has to be tackled at all levels of football, preferably from the top down.

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

The RDO included some figures from this weekend just gone, they include 4 referees (2 of which were still trainees) leaving the game due to abuse received at matches. A referee being assaulted, a referee being followed back to the changing rooms and verbally abused by a coach, and a referee...

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

When I did my course I think Kent ran two one for DofE people and one for “normal” referees. My course was still predominantly youngsters, who with the exception of one or two openly admitted they were just doing it for the money.

WSL - Man City vs Spurs

If I had to draw a picture of a handball offence where the arms aren’t in a natural position then I would draw that. It’s bizarre that neither ref or Lino caught that one.

    LUFC V LFC

When I saw it live on TV it didn’t look like a red card to me. But having seen some partial replays (stopping before the injury occurs) I can see why a red was given.

    Referee Retention - Open Letter

Didn’t refsupport or some such organise a strike a few years ago? If I recall there wasn’t much take up and nothing changed.

    New Ref

Congrats, getting the first one out of the way is a big step. You will need to refer to your league handbook to see what you need to report to the league, for example my leagues require me to complete a form and email it to the referee secretary after every game. You only have to enter games...

    First open age league game

As others have said, go out there any enjoy yourself. Get the basics right, and don’t be afraid to deal with dissent.

    Pre-Match Kit Check

I tend to have a quick look while the players are stud in a group stretching off, I always check jewellery and shin pads etc. boots is a tricky one, the laws only say that players have to be wearing footwear, and that their equipment must not be dangerous.

    Yellow or red?

Red for me, if a flying kick to the face isn’t endangering a players safety I don’t know what is.

    “He need better glasses”

I took that to mean that the first player made the comment to a team mate, not that the comment was about a team mate.

    Scorecards

I appreciate that new referees need to master the basics, I.e. proper caution/dismissal procedure and team work and communication without relying on buzzer flags etc. But, for me, in a league where team sheets are used and given to the referee before the game, providing each player has a number...

    “He need better glasses”

That’s not a red for me. maybe a caution (sin bin) for dissent depending on the volume and tone etc. id be more inclined to let it go if it I s said in exasperation, than if the player ran halfway across the pitch to scream it at me. but as has been said already, it’s one where you really...
