    Blowing whistle on free kicks

Agree completely. The only thing I'd add is that a quick free kick does have to be exactly that - quick. There's no such thing as a long non-ceremonial FK, there comes a point where (in attacking positions at least), the defence has a right to expect a whistle to restart.

    Dissent & Sin Bin

"Banter back" is still not the stepped approach. As Russell points out, there are things that are just straightforward dissent, and I've got no problem going straight to the pocket for that. But the original poster said that he didn't feel the comments in question quite crossed the line - so...

    Dissent & Sin Bin

No steps at all? So when someone says something in response to a decision, you either ignore it or bang out a yellow?

    ref seeing red

No you cannot. Seems a bit harsh for DOGSO, but he'll be spending next weekend mowing the lawn.

    Injured Player

Fair enough, thought that was the case but didn't have my LOTG with me at the time of writing, so I hedged!

    Gear Organizers

https://www.refsworlduk.co.uk/collections/bags-and-organisers/products/refsworld-referee-organiser I know it says sold out, but @Ross can usually give you an idea if/when they'll be coming back in stock.

Take 10 minutes... ok, make it 35

This was discussed in my sin bin seminar, and the tutor did say that the funding gap was being covered by the FA for a certain number of years. But yes, what happens after that point, I don't know....

    Kicking ball at retreating player

Yeah, I think the referee could have done almost anything here, depending on his judgement of how forceful the kick was and how deliberate the defenders delaying was. The one thing that there is no argument in law for is a retake without a card!

    Injured Player

It might just be convention, but we don't typically see injured players invited back onto the pitch until a few seconds after play has restarted? I'm not sure on this, but presumably you wouldn't let an injured player come back on in order to take a free kick and restart the game?

    Bad day at the office!

Yeah, apologies if I wasn't clear - when I said explain my decisions, I didn't mean get into discussions, I just meant clearly say why you have/haven't given the decision and move on. If you've said nothing, it adds confusion and invites questions. If you explain a decision, the onus is on...

    Bad day at the office!

It's easy to go into your shell when things aren't going well, but often I think the way to get away from that is to try and be more vocal in an effort to become a confident and visible presence. If players are appealing for fouls you don't intend to give, don't be tempted to quietly ignore the...

    2018 Nike Kit

I'm a little shorter at 5'11" and when I wore a medium Nike shirt 2 years ago (I guess the 2017 kit?), it was long enough for me to tuck in, but would come untucked as soon as I raised an arm above shoulder height. I switched to a large when I bought new kit at the start of last season and...

    Youth game match fees

Agree with a number of the previous posters - fees are set by the league in agreement with the clubs, claiming anything other than what you're owed seems very odd to me. Some leagues I do have a fixed fee, so I obviously don't claim mileage, some other leagues have a lower fee with additional...

    Make a decision

I'm not for a second saying that the laws are written as well as they possibly could be - far from it. But by choosing to ignore the context and reasoning for the change, you're depriving yourself of vital information that will help you make the right decision. The language is vague. You keep...

Don't break the team pen moment

I'll give you a clue: once you rule out "masonic signals" you only have the option of giving the same answer to both questions

    Refereeing First Game NEW REF

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack! As with a lot of things, the procedure will vary depending on the league. I'd try and get hold of the league handbook if you can - if you email whoever gave you the appointment, they might be able to either send you a digital copy, or answer the specific question...

Don't break the team pen moment

Fair point. So once the AR's waited for the referee's decision and wants to flag in support of that decision, can you clarify for me what signal he should be making for 1. a penalty kick and 2. an attacking FK just outside the box?

    Make a decision

I don't see any reason for IFAB to get involved if we look at the context and apply common sense. It's fairly obvious why this change was made, but in case there's any doubt, let me quote from the IFAB explanation section that accompanies the law change: The point of the change is to stop goals...

    Refereeing First Game NEW REF

It has occurred to me that it's maybe meant to allow the league to spot inconsistencies if a caution is reported as PI without any warnings, but even if that is the case, I don't then know what they would do with that information. It's good practice to warn a player he's getting close to the...

    Refereeing First Game NEW REF

No idea why. Next to each caution/send off I have to pick from "No Warning Given", "Warning Given" or "Warnings Given". Absolutely no idea what they do with that information!
