In-play instruction to player

Would value the thought of the panel please. County league U13 fixture today. Through ball has reached the diving GK and I see an attacker about to dive in foot first at speed. Even if the ball were to come back off the GK, boot to body would be inevitable.

I shout 'Pull out' which the player does and his Coach protests that I am not allowed to tell his player to do so. V brief conversation explaining that I could and there was a player safety issue as well as risk of a serious foul.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't recommend saying pull out, as that is a bit too much a precise of an instruction, rather say something like careful, nothing silly, etc.

There's been similar discussion around referees giving advice to players like "stay on your feet", "don't dive in". That is too specific for me and generic advice like careful or nothing silly is safer.

That's v helpful, thank you.

It was reflexive so having your better suggestions in mind now will definitely help.

‘Nothing silly’ ‘careful’

Saying things isn’t a problem as being proactive is generally a good thing. Just need to be careful around phrases used.

Agreed with above advice, but I’ll play devil’s advocate and say that a player can equally choose to ignore your “suggestion”
