Only me shouting for a penalty then. Clear penalty for me. Anywhere else, no ball, that high, studs on top of foot, foul + caution .
I suspect there will be a divide amongst those who have officiated at senior level and those who have not. I also recognised it to be a a penalty.

The grabbing on that Dutch freekick there was obsessive on Simon. I get it would be a big penalty to give. But he was the rear post runner and they just held him to the ground. VVD rightfully furious at the decision and getting himself in the book.

Wasn't VVD protesting the Goal Kick decision? That was a pretty poor one

I hope he has a good game. There's already been far too much chat in the media about him and would be great for him to silence the doubters.
Can't complain... Couple of contested decisions for ball out of play.

Whilst his foul tolerance for physical contact was low he was, mostly, consistent with it.

Got the important decisions correct (in my opinion) and and the VAR intervention was one that was difficult to spot in real time.

Iā€™m intrigued as to what whoever was in the England dugout was cautioned for, as the obvious thing would be delaying the restart, but it was a Dutch throwā€¦ šŸ¤”
But Iā€™m not too bothered šŸ¤£

This penalty has split the forum!!
I honestly thought "they'd be SCREAMING for that in my Sunday league".
And that is the problem for me. Don't really have a problem if the decision was penalty or play on, but I genuinely don't see how it can have been judged as a clear and obvious error to have not given it. Not complaining obviously, but it feels very inconsistent with other incidents in UEFA games.

Tend to think with incidents like this that the Ref HEARD a contact, made a decision based on what they saw from their angle, and then was drawn to the reason it occurred.

The more I watch it the more I'm satisfied the VAR was right to intervene. Think this photo sums it up for me:
i

If you're going in studs first like that, get none of the ball and make contact with the opponent, it should absolutely be a foul every time.

Same thought here. Idiot defending. Pen YC justified.

Butā€¦

Football doesnā€™t expect a shot away and attempted block with contact to be an offence. A forensic VAR intervention here is way out of context. I think it highlights how immature VAR is. Now that this decision has been made ā€œfor the first timeā€ they will have to fix it.

Iā€™ve said on here before. I think tightening the law here would be great for football. It should be an offence. Defenders should not be allowed to foul while blocking. Making blocking shots harder is an obvious positive move for football.

But not ā€œon the hoofā€ like this. The Dutch were poor today but they were also reffed out of it.

Is the phrase "clear and obvious" just an English/FA/Premier League thing? Or is it applied to UEFA/FIFA too?

It's a Laws of the Game thing. But like many terms in the laws there (ex: hand making body unnaturally bigger) there is a large amount of opinion and interpretation.
