Norwich v Wigan

The Referee Store
Anywhere else on the pitch, the referee wouldn't hesitate in giving a free kick and a card!

Comes down to the age old 'won the ball ref! for me. He's still reckless, studs have followed through high, and as a result it's careless minimum, and it's a PK. Good argument for reckless and YC too.

I would have no issue if a red was shown here

its certainly got to be awarded as a fk (pk). and after that the ref can choose his colour. I would go yellow ( based only on the clip)
I have 2x reds in the last 2 games of last season - however they were at a faster speed and one was from behind and the other was higher.

Either way though - that was not his best tackle!

I think if you give it as a foul the colour really has to be red not yellow. Straight leg with studs making contact very high up the leg, it really ticks the SFP boxes. That said, very difficult to see real time.

I'm steering away from red because blue has largely stopped his momentum and, to a large extent, the impact is because yellow is kicking through into the blue leg. I don't see that his safety is endangered.

However, without doubt reckless from the moment blue lunges to clear the ball away

Yeah, I struggle to justify red where a huge part of the impact force comes from the yellow player missing the ball and initiating contact with studs that (perhaps by chance more than judgement) otherwise wouldn't have touched him. If yellow realises he's been tacked and doesn't swing, this becomes a "referees yellow" - technically required by law, but pretty unexpected to most.

The yellow player causing the contact to happens helps turn this from a soft/surprising yellow to an easy yellow, but doesn't make it red for me.

On one hand I see your logic. I can only see the still though - and it does look like the actions of the offender have endangered the safety of the opponent. If he’s not studs showing, off the floor, out of control, then there’s no danger. ;)

Studs leave the ground at all sorts of times in a match for all sorts of 100% legitimate reasons. The fact that studs exist doesn't mean we send players off for not having them safely planted in the ground at all times!

Clear penalty and I'd go with a yellow, I don't think that goes beyond reckless.

On the commentary - don't you hate it when the commentators imagine they understand the referee's though process?
