Double Red Card??

Level 6 Referee
Was speaking to a fellow referee the other night over a pint. He was asking is it possible to show the same player 2 red cards. For example....player is sent off for DOGSO and red card is shown. On his way off the pitch he starts an argument with you and uses OFFINABUS. Could you show the player another red? or would you just report it in the same report and not bother with the other red? We both could not really decide conclusively. Thoughts??

Yeah thats what I was trying to go for but he kept referencing some SPL game where a player was shown two....although I think he has got a little confused and was confusing me. Cheers guys.

Probably referring to Dean Windass who famously "received" 3 red cards when playing for Aberdeen against Dundee United. Two cautions led to the first, OFFINABUS to the ref produced the second and on leaving the pitch he "assaulted" the corner flag(!) to get the third. I don't know whether the ref showed 3 reds but his match report apparently indicated he sent off Windass 3 times.

Sent a player off the other day for saying (once I called him over) "Now what do you want you f**king idiot"

As he was walking, player turned around and spat at me.

...Shame this was at a works tournament I was helping out with officiating :)

Dare say the player is probably a Sunday League player though - so would have been nice to Misconduct Report him haha

If the player spat at you, you should not only report it as misconduct but report it to the police as it is Assault. Similar thing happened to me, player got a 1 year ban and I got grief off my association secretary for not reporting the matter to the police.

I seem to recall from discussion about that incident that things are done slightly differently in Scotland, maybe just in the SPL, and so multiple red cards are accepted there including in the tunnel after the game. In England you just show one red card and after that it progresses to misconduct reports.

Cards can only be shown to players, substitutes and substituted players. A player becomes an outside agent once he has been shown a red card, therefore anything that happens after that is submitted as a report.

I had something similar (although even more complicated with two other non-caution reports which I will not go into) where I yellow carded a player during the match for dissent, and gave him a second yellow for the same offence just after the final whistle - 1st report. Then, after a mass confrontation there was OFFINABUS from him for which I sent a separate report.

Reviving this thread after finding it using the search function. Will probably set myself up for all sorts of ridicule but here goes.

Basically an exact rerun of the OP. Happened to me last week.

Player handballs on the line in a DOGSO situation. Arms up and away from body. Certain goal stopped.

I blow the penalty and then explain in a nice calm voice I'm going to red card him. Objections from him and the captain but I say I have no choice he has to go. Pull out the red and show it to him. Turns on his heel and as he's walking away (probably 1 to 2m from me) says loud enough for most of the players to hear 'you're a f#ckwit'.

So I give a quick toot of the whistle and show him the red again.

At half time coach comes on a says did you give him a second red? I said yes he called me a f#ckwit. Coach says, oh Ok then.

Now I know you're not meant to show 2 reds but my logic was all the players have heard that, I need them to know I've heard it, it's not on and I'm dealing with it.

At the end of the match I just wrote in the match report Red (R4) for DOGSO handball, Red (R6) OFFINABUS towards match official.

Probably wrong to actually show 2 reds but that was my thinking.

Yeah once you've shown the red you can't show another. It should go in as a separate misconduct report. Would suggest getting in touch with your county fa to rectify
Or in our case, we call it a seperate incident report, and get in touch with your referee association (I think at Coffs they may be appointed directly by football association though).

Thought to get this in before the thread gets the death touch.

(And, as of recently, team officials, though that doesn't affect the point you are making about players already sent off.)

It's all good. They're all over it. We have an online form to fill out following the match and there's no place to put a second red. So just filled out the form as a DOGSO red and then in the 'behaviour after send-off' wrote down what he said. He'll likely get 6-7 weeks.

Still worth remembering for next time though - the laws are weirdly precious about the use of the red card and anyone appealing against one of the sanctions might be able to use "well how come he showed me a red card for this other offence too?" as part of a defence to try and call your judgement/law knowledge in to question.

This should not matter to a competent review board. But that doesn't describe all of them . . .

Just to add to the multitude, just one red but include the whole event (If you think it warrants it). Happened to me. Straight red for dangerous play. in fairnes to the lad he was going for the ball, he just didn't take into account that having got to the ball first his momentum then took him straight into an opposition player's throat studs first. He was expecting a yellow and seemed happy with that but when I produced the red he became very upset and verbally abused me for a considerable period of time. I included it in my report and he got 3 weeks suspension for the sending off and 4 weeks for the tirade.

And we won’t be going any further here! Do t revive old threads please.
