EURO 2022: Referees - Discussion

What do you think of the management of the referees and their assistants so far? Who has been surprisingly good for you? And what is your tip for the final? (I think/wish: Monzul)

I thought it was a good performance all in all. Yes, there were one or two scenes, but we all make mistakes. Things never run smoothly, so why at a Euro? I'm more hung up on the use of VAR than the referees on the pitch. In one or two situations, a correction or at least a "Phew, please have a look at it on the monitor" would have been appropriate.

What do you think?

Overall, I think the officiating has been pretty good. The one really glaring error was the VAR offside in the Sweden-Switzerland match where the VAR team did not properly use the ball as the offside line. That's technically an error in Law and could have been a protestable error as opposed to a judgment call.

Like any other professional/senior international competition these days, I think misconduct application was too lenient. There were some tactical fouls not cautioned, and I felt that the downgraded SFP red card in the France-Italy match was a poor use of VAR (it was correctly ruled as SFP on the field and should never have been recommended for an OFR). I also felt like the overturned goal in the Sweden-Belgium match for offside sure looked like it was onside, but the TV angles on the replays in the US didn't show a definitive TV angle. But if those are my major points of contention, I'd say that's a pretty good tournament.

It's not been too bad IMO, but I think Ellen White's dive in the first match is still a matter for debate (just because it's England none of the pundits are calling it out as a dive !)

I would have liked to see the blatant holding YC given against Germany in the semi. It left a one vs three. It was a poor advantage. For me it highlighted that, in this tournament, like the EPL, there is too much emphasis on avoiding cards for big teams/players/matches.

It was an outrageous off the ball foul by Germany’s best player, Oberdorf. The referee gave a weak warning. It meant she was able to take a delay of game YC in the last seconds.

Think, it’s a good choice. She deserves it twice.
Ever since the 2019 Women’s World Cup,
I’ve just never been a big Frappart fan. I thought she let WAY too much go both ways in the US-Netherlands final, and that game was not a good display of soccer from two teams that should have put on a show. I’ve also thought Frappart was not that great on her Euro matches. Based on performances in this tournament, Monzul deserves the final.
