What do you use for the coin flip

Anyone willing to admit after the coin toss they stride over the the AR or 4th and hand them the cherished coin for safekeeping?

so it can bounce out of the ars pockets instead of theirs?

Nope.
Any ref trying that with me would receive a broad smile and a shake of the head. 😉

If I actually had a forelock, I'd probably tug that as well .. 🙄😁

The Referee Store
I use a BIT COIN a cheap bit of tat from Ebay. Its large and shiny and cost 99p. I have also used coins from holidays in the past and a range of foreign coins that I would pick up from junk shops and the like.
I found putting the coin in my back pocket it would drop out and I would see it lying on the grass as I ran past it. I find my chest pockets are far better as they're usually deeper and if it does come out there's a better chance of you seeing it.

If you put it in an envelope (I used to cut an envelope in half and fold it over to close it) it will bounce around less and it is even less likely to bounce out. Or, what I now do, is put it in one of those wallet inserts designed to hold your ID.

Anthony Taylor always does that, although to 4th official as opposed to AR.

Stick the coin under your watch face and you’ll never lose it 😀

Unfortunately, again shows you aren’t a team player. Could understand as AR, but as 4th official you aren’t likely to lose the coin as an active official is. Why would you not take it?

And in reality if you were an SG1 referee and refused to take the coin you wouldn’t be an SG1 referee for long, and wouldn’t have got there in the first place.

I wear a sweatband on my wrist/forearm and put the coin under the sweatband. Never caused me any inconvenience or lost it.

Some of my referee shorts have had a tiny coin pocket though I never used them.

am not carrying someone elses baggage.

Who did Taylor give his coin to in Sunday League?

if, as expected, its some special prize coin, thats on him for using it, his responsibility

if its a scabby 10p, who cares if it drops

its the very definition of arrogance, here, look after my showy flashy special coin you minion.

its condescending and purely an action to put a cherry on top of how fabulous you are

Or, as is quite possibly the case, doing a favour for a mate so they don't lose their coin on the pitch. 🤷

Its really not. No elite referee needs the favour of watching guard of a 10p piece for fear of its loss.

who does the referee operating alone give his coin too?

Its seen by many as nothing, from personal experience and from the tales of many others, they have felt pressured into minding a special ( the most special football coin you can have) coin
They have guarded it, not through choice, but through coercion.
They felt they were obligated to accept responsibility for the coin, for fear, as per Rustys post, of alienation if they did not

this is bullying anywhere else. Hey even though you dont want to do this, you are doing it or else..

4th can easy carry their own 2: 10p piece, should game be a cup tie, and a coin is needed, hey presto ref, we have a replacement 2p...

but no, thats not showy enough, it does not signify how superior the referee is.

if Taylor came to you with his euro coin and you are happy to mind it, great
You might however not be happy to mind it, what do you do then? Say no and risk your refereeing future? thats intimidation

much same as boss in office asking you to make him a cuppa. You might be ok with it
If you are not though, its very difficult to say no...

Crikey. You've escalated that quickly.
I was lucky enough to be a 4th official between 2 professional teams recently. The referee, a FL referee, also my RDO, asked me to hold onto his coin, and I felt none of those things.
I have also asked 4ths, when I have them to hold my coin and conversely felt that I was doing none of those things. Obviously if they said no then I'd of accepted that.
It's a rare 45 minutes where the chances of losing my coin is dramatically reduced.
I'd say the personal issues within your referee dept. Run very deep it that is what you have come up with about sticking a coin in your pocket for 45 mins. Bullying? Coercion? Alienation? It's a coin, in your pocket nothing more, nothing less, it does not need dramatising.

which leads me nicely to the bigger story. A now retired official had the most precious of coins, one not ( yet) issued to Taylor.
Common practise he gave it to his minion 4ths. They hated this but what can you do...

And yes it happened, one afternoon, the 4th lost it, around 15 min in, realises its not in his pocket

The remainder of the game, and half time was spent, looking for the coin

no other official duty mattered, Soul focus was on finding the coin, and, dreading the post match conversation telling bionic ref that his cherished coin had now gone

all avoided had either the referee looked after his own beloved item,, or, a scabby 2p was used.

Or they could be adults about it and just say oh well, I certainly.wouldnt lose focus on my.pther jobs based on looking for a coin.

This is my point. The ref in question was so powerful, you dare not lose his coin...
This statement pretty much confirms the issues here run far deeper than the custody of a coin and I think it has skewed your perception of this very simple, amicable request.

Bullying?🤔 It’s a coin. It’s literally asking a mate, to hold a coin.

I'm sure we'd all agree that bullying of junior officials by senior officials (or in any other combination) is unacceptable and should be called out.

I think where we are all struggling @Anubis is to get from our individual experience of a referee handing us as AR or 4th a coin to bullying. I can think of a few occasions where I've been asked and it's never been in that context - it's always just it's less likely to fly out of my pocket and I've been happy to oblige.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I have never seen bullying of an AR or 4th by a referee in any context. Sure there are some officials I enjoy working with more than others - same as any other avenue in life. But a bit of mild pomposity and 'does he really need to take himself that seriously' is about as bad as it's got.

In fact, one of the things I most enjoy about refereeing is the opportunity to work with colleagues in all their shapes, sizes and with all their individual idiosyncrasies. If you'd have asked me when I was playing, I might have had a different view, but since taking up the whistle I generally find they / we are an agreeable lot !

Methinks time to draw a line under this one before the thread becomes too personal ....

I've never taken a coin out with me.

This was an accident on my first game (i forgot a coin) so i decided to say to the away captain "red or yellow".

And in my left shorts pocket i have one of each (for 2 yellow card dismissals).

Nearly 30 years later i've never changed.

I've saved myself a few quid in the process!! ;);););););)
