I have made a quick search but couldn’t find an obvious thread on this … hopefully not a repeat …

Are sinbins compulsory in grassroots?

Definition of grassroots?

I ask this question while waiting to get my first 5 games in, and having spoken with a local under 16 coach … his view was “Sinbin until under 12, but not in our leagues … no, never”

Do different leagues have ability to use or not? I just thought it was compulsory … ?!?!?!

Thanks newref.confused.com :)

Mandatory in England up to Level 5, including youth football.

That’s what I thought - so why are coaches (and other referees) making our jobs more difficult by not “playing to this system”?

Is it recommended/necessary to remind coaches before game that sinbins are in use or is my conversation with coach a one-off?”

You should have access to each competition's rules (probably online) and these should all include temporary dismissals.

So each league can have a different level/system of temporary dismissal 🤔

Can you give me an idea of the “scope” of these different “systems” … I will try an online search anyway … thank you

They have no scope - the purpose of reading competition rules is that gives you the truth as opposed to a coach giving you an opinion.
Sin bins are used at levels below Isthmian/Southern, i.e. what used to be Supply Leagues (e.g. Wessex League, Combined Counties)

Academy's can also be different e.g. I did PL Tournament twice u14 and u15 all cards were non sin bin even had a rep from PL there who told us apparently academy’s don’t use them.

Yes understand - it wasn’t so much about me getting the coaches opinion as about the coach not knowing 🤷‍♀️ and then it made me question my own knowledge …

Coaches know, they’re just trying to mess with your head hoping that they will gain some sort of advantage.

Treat it the same as players shouting for a foul when you know full well there's nothing there. That's what I used to do anyway.

That’s what I do, just after they were first introduced here I just pointed out to them that all clubs had to send at least 1 person to one of the training sessions.

Love that I sent a GK in the SB in one of the last games of season.

Award pen. GK dives, gets ball, but follows through with his legs that were raised.

Pen given - he moans too much, gets a 10 minute break. Players say - you can’t sin bin a goalie… wrong!

I did say to their captain at the end of the game (who agreed with the decision) that I had made a mistake and should have also booked him for the foul…. He saw the funny side of it!!

One of my favourites is when you sin bin a player and they say ‘but I didn’t swear at you’. I always tell them if they can find where dissent has to involve swearing, I’ll refund their match fee
