England v Austria

Commentary team said that VAR checked the goal AFTER GLT had awarded it????

That can't be correct surely, there WAS a delay before Austria kicked off again, so VAR did check something, but not the goal surely?

Anyone else see it/can clear up the 'mystery'?

The Referee Store
Never watched it but GLT would have said the whole ball was over the line. It doesn’t award the goal. VAR would still check the goal is valid as they do with every goal. No fouls, offsides etc

BUT , you don't see a delay to kick off after every goal - as here - with the referee pointing to her ear, so must have been checking for something specific?

I thought at the time that the ref signalled the goal incredibly quickly and wondered whether she had forgotten about GLT and just gone with what she saw.

However that wouldn't explain the delay when they were waiting to kick off. There was a (close, but not that close) offside decision in the build up, so I'm guessing that was it

I believe they checked offside and to make sure there wasn't an attacker handball when she chested it.

Also since we've seen GLT fail at least twice in recent seasons, I don't think it's insane for the var to check for a clear error on the goal line.

Your second line makes sense, but that's not part of the protocol though is it?

First line sounds correct, so points off for the commentary team.

Thought ref did fine in a fairly easy game, maybe missed one or two fouls but no KMIs to worry about so all good - I'm sure we would all be happy with just 2 'minor' errors in any match!

Senior AR missed a fairly obvious corner, but then again, we've all been there!

yeah there's also no way the AR would have been quick enough to get to the goal line to be in the best place to judge. even on the freeze from from along the goal line i wasnt sure! shows you why the tech is so good

The commentators were saying they were checking ball over line, and they have the VAR audio feed so no reason to think they were wrong. I watched it real time and I didn't think it was a goal, even when they showed the side on angle, so I can certainly see why they checked it as something didn't smell right. I'm not even convinced GLT was calibrated properly, but I guess VAR could only overrule if they had clear evidence it was wrong.

I think GLT was correct. We can see the crossbar was slightly behind the goal line from the perspective of the camera angle. That is what the ball appears to be still "touching". Plus combined with the lower frame rate tv camera it gave the doubt. I'm confident it would be visibly in if you took a still shot from that Hawkeye camera.

Like I said GLT has failed at least twice in recent years. One to not award a clear goal in the Premier League and the other was giving a false goal in the Bundesliga. Thankfully VAR fixed second one.

The computer graphic they show a little while after can certainly be manipulated, you could be right about the commentators, but them spouting nonsense would not exactly be a first would it? :p
