Did Jon Moss just play an advantage on the first goal, or am I seeing things?

Definitely unexpected!

6 minutes in and 1-1 already, what a mess both goals were!

Comical defending for Villa's goal with the Liverpool player shoving his opponent in the back then failing back theatrically. Was the VAR delay for checking Jota's high boot in the build up to Liverpool's goal, looked awkward at best?

The shove would explain the advantage, but you're damned if you think we'd be able to give the same come Saturday afternoon on the local park!

Yes, both a mess.

As the commentator said, checking something, the high boot would be the one i guess.

A couple of easy dissent cautions missed/ignored already, but this is the Premier League, so the bar before players are deemed to have crossed the line is set so high only the ISS can see it.

I love how he waits for the ball to go in before signalling. How's he getting out of it if it doesn't go in?

I've just remembered a time I actually played an unorthodox advantage, iirc, player fouled for a penalty (was a soft one), ball falls to attacker just on the edge of the penalty area who slams it into the bottom corner...

Cue me shouting advantage with the arms out!

Nearest defender was not best pleased and made it known to me (but nothing ott, just a word to him).

Good to see the advantage tonight though.

Reminiscent of the advantage for the Bernardo Silva goal in the UCL game (forgot which Madrid team) at the Etihad. No signal until the goal has gone in, then a big signal for the cameras

Wasn't a good "advantage" for the foul near half way, where Villa's only option was to pass 20 yards backwards.

Wouldn't have been shocked to see either goal disallowed. Clear offside ahead of the first goal, only question relates to phases of play. High boot and then a colission by Jota ahead of Liverpool goal, think that would have been disallowed in a "lower bar" league.

He did. For the big push in the back. I’ll wager he wouldn’t have given a foul if the ball had not ended up in the back of the net.

High bar for pens. Low bar for advantage goal!!! Great for the observation!

I normally like Jon Moss, but that first half was right up there with as bad as I have seen from a PL referee. No major decisions, but there were just countless fouls and throw-ins very obviously incorrectly given the wrong way.

And in fairness that is why he is an elite level referee. For most referees it would be very difficult to recover from a first half that poor, but he was actually much better in the second half. I suspect ARs and 4th official would have tried to buck him up at half time, as it was clear to anyone watching that he was all over the place.

Watch the video, he had NO intention of awarding anything and then tries to claim advantage. Embarassing

No chance he was gping to award a pk there

he has absolutely ( and understandably aa his time at the top comes to an end), jumped on a chance to make himself a star. Fooling nobody though

Undoubtably the poorest regular top game referee since the premiership began and it can only be his warm personality that appealed to some selection panel

Thank heavens for small mercy he arrived too old for fifa nomination, but I suppose motivation for new referees, proof you can be out of shape, unfit, blow out your archie, lack positional sense, exert zero authority and appear flustered at all times yet still turn out at the top games, ( plus of course a default FA Cup final)

by all accounts a lovely guy though

Am I the only one or does anyone else think he would not have awarded a penalty if the first goal shot was fluffed over the bar yet he signalled advantage after the ball went in? Purely to make himself look good.

Fooled nobody in the know.

back fired, has merely cemented his position as most inept premiership official of all time

100%. You can tell by his body language and movement that he was never even considering a penalty there
