I took a trip to Specsavers ..

Well the lines were right for once I guess, I should have taken a trip to specsavers a bit earlier :D :D

Turns out my astigmatism has gotten stronger. I have noticed I'm squinting a bit more and often things are a bit more blurry than they used to be. This really hit home when I was AR and wanted to inform the ref to book someone for SPA (for a shirt tug that he wouldn't have seen) that led to a melee. Despite my best efforts I couldn't make out the face of the player (about 13 yards away), by the time I'd moved closer to the melee he'd blended in with the rest of the crowd and got away without the booking.

I really don't fancy reffing with glasses so trying contacts of the toric type. Does anyone else use these? On day 2 and they don't seem to be very clear, I have been told they take a week to get use to.

Well at least you know now, instead of prolonging it.

I had the same issue and struggled with contacts initially, however after a few weeks i got used to them. I found that daily's (Even though a little more expensive) were a lot better. best advise i can give is make sure you have them in at least an hour before your game as they take time to settle

That's good to know they worked for you eventually. This is my second go at them, had tried them some time ago and I couldn't see clearly, my vision was a bit better so I just gave up on them. This time I do really need them to work though, being farsighted I'm told it makes the variation in my natural sight worse too (due overaccommodating), sometimes it's fine then it drops .. hopefully they work.

I cant remember the exact lenses i bought but they are relevantly new and suit Astigmatism, they feel very water based so don't move around a lot which has helped in me staying in focus and stopping the blur. my routine is a minimum two hours before a game to allow them to settle

I've worn contacts to referee in for years, albeit "normal" ones rather than toric. Agree that dailies are more forgiving and would also echo the suggestion to give it at least a week to get used to them.

I use contacts religiously for all sports. It took me quite a few attempts to find the right brand that didn't dry my eyes out. I like monthlies as I don't wear them so much and they last a long time if looked after.

One minus for contacts is that I now have some deterioration close up (age!) and contacts make it worse.

I have been wearing contacts for astigmatism in both eyes now for around 18 years. I wear my lenses all day every day, so officially too long for "normal" contact lenses. There are monthly lenses you can buy that let enough air through so that you don't have to remove them for the month - I find these most comfortable for me, but I do remove them at night time still. In terms of price point - slightly more than normal lenses and a fair bit cheaper than dailies (if you wear them every day).

I've started to wear contact lenses because of refereeing. I have 1 toric lens and it does take a little longer for that to settle. To get used to them (and to build up my eye's tolerance to them) I wore them a fair amount over the first week, building up the length of time. I know just wear them when I ref - so generally Sat and Sun and sometimes once more in the week.

As others have said, I try to pop them in a couple of hours ahead to give them time to settle, but generally they are fine after about 10 mins for the toric lens. I use the daily disposable ones.

I wore disposable toric lenses when I took up refereeing. I only need glasses for TV and driving. Generally got on fine with lenses, except for when it came writing in the good book, as I don't need glasses for my phone or reading! Occasionally during summer tournaments, by the end of the day, eyes would get a bit sore, not necessarily just from the lenses, suncream and sweat getting in your eyes doesn't help!

I went to specsavers to say my eyes were getting worse, but they said no change. So I guess I'm just crap at seeing.

I wear torics and have done for years. I prefer monthlies because the dailies are so flimsy I find them hard to handle.

I'm sure you know this but toric lenses have different strengths at different angles which corrects your non-spherical eyes. They are ballasted so they automatically rotate under gravity to the right place. This is why they take time to 'settle'. There are normally three small marks at the bottom of the lens and putting the lens in with those at the bottom reduces the settling time.

I can happily wear mine all day every day, I don't even notice they're there. However, having tried other brands, that's not true of them all. (I use Proclear.)
