Retirement

Reading the post it seems that Ben is complementary about Winter alongside Dean.
I can see both sides. He is always going to football games, judging on his twitter, but he's in cahoots woth Halsey and Hackett who have obvious axes to grind.

100% agree. Hackett comes across as very bitter. But he occasionally makes some valid points and observations too.

Very occasionally, but usually he comes across as a bitter old man. And unfortuantely he has far less credibility than the other ex-referees that criticise, as he headed PGMOL at a time when things went far from well.

Sadly I don't think Mike Dean could do the head of PGMOL role, as that very much requires manage up rather than manage down skills, I really can't picture Mike in discussions with senior FA and PGMOL execs. Of course, the best managers can manage up as well as manage down, but sadly they are very few and far between.

That's the link. I have only watched 20 mins so far.
Gotta say, I've not managed to read a Referee's Autobiography from beginning to end cos they're typically boring
But I quite enjoyed this Podcast. My views on the game and refereeing philosophy are aligned with Mr Winter's. Even tho I'm a Mag and he's a Smoggie!

This is the Danny Mills incident discussed; Yellow card OK with me (some are given, some are not). Mills rolled the dice so tough tittie. He hates Winter cos a report was submitted for abusing Winter after the game
Mills claims the report was unjustified cos such abuse was normal (or something along those lines). He's a cr4p pundit FWIW

Will be interesting to see who from SG1 gets a "promotion" to the top 6 vs top 6 games, if three of the candidates for them are leaving. Darren England maybe?

I feel like quite a feel will have to come up as there are vacancies there but many they might think about foreign officials to come join?
No chance of foreign referees.

Several SG2 referees came up last season. Gillett, Harrington, Salisbury and Brooks, but they have barely been used. Leaves the big hitters as Taylor and Oliver, with Pawson, Tierney, Kavanagh and Marriner in support.

If any SG2 referees are to come up it will be Josh Smith and possibly Tim Robinson I suspect.

Am surprised Mariner plans another season, his legs clearly went a few years ago, As much as the players trust and respect him, and he is a very good referee, he is nowhere near mobile enough. And its not an aspect which will suddenly improve

You've said before, but he's never had legs. I remember watching him in the Championship and he looked very one paced, still a very good referee though.

Gillet is technically a foreign referee as he spent most of his career in Australia working there and it was only when he got promoted to SG2 that he stopped working there. What I mean to say is that the same could happen to others where they work foreign and the get promoted to SG2 and then to SG1 in a season or couple.

He wasn't promoted to SG 2.
When you move countries and apply to the FA of that country generally they will place you in their system at an equivalent level.
This wasn't us asking for Gillet to come referee PL he is studying here and wa Ted to Co tinue refereeing.
This is a FIFA official, with international experience. He was placed at a level which turned out below his level as he was promoted within a season and receisved much praise for the games he did in the championship

Even Warnock liked him😲

Saw Josh Smith live at the last QPR home game - very competent, although not a difficult game, so hard to judge fully.

He was born abroad, yes. But he is now an English referee in such much that he is registered with the FA. He wasn't brought to England because of his refereeing, rather he chose to relocate to England, I believe because he had signed up for a PhD at Liverpool University. As James has rightly said, when you transfer from overseas you are placed at an appropriate level, and as a FIFA official and the top referee on the A-League it was decided to put him at SG2. He didn't get promoted to SG2, that was his first assigned level after moving to England. And he stopped working games in Australia because it would have been a bloody long commute, not because he had been promoted to SG2 😂
