That's my lot

The Referee Store
After more than 10 years and 300+ games, yesterday was my last.
A mixture of abuse, and no longer being a good enough referee prompted me to hang my whistle up.
No going back, shirts and boots in the bin.
The golf course now beckons.

If the hearts no longer in it then its the correct course of action.

However a break sometimes helps, step away, time will tell if you miss it.

if you do, you come back, maybe in a diff league
if you dont, then you have done the right thing.

that aside, can the shirt(s) be passed onto a new ref? There is always the next generation

Your experience would be invaluable for newer referees if you would consider becoming a mentor - please consider and ask your RDO for the local approach to mentoring.

Yes, that's something I am considering.
worry doing, with 10 years of experience, there is a lot you can help with. Also consider becoming as observer - you will be able to do the lower end promotion, where they will also benefit from your knowledge.

After 18 years I'm seriously thinking of calling time too. The last three seasons have been very start/stop due to COVID and with all the disruption my enthusiasm have waned. My heart and mind haven't been in it and I know my performances haven't been at a level I'm personally happy with. At the same time I've been doing a lot of running and have started doing some 10Ks, Park Runs etc which clash with football times. I'm haven't 100% decided and some mates are encouraging me to look at alternative leagues. Season is almost over so I'll see out my final games and see how I'm feeling.

I too am throwing the Valkeen in the bin. Been a laugh, just can’t be arsed anymore.

I think I felt a little like this a few years ago, I was really struggling late 2019 - picked up an injury shortly into the new year and then Covid hit, so then ended up not refereeing for a good year or so. When I did start again, I knew my fitness wasn't anywhere near good enough, so started off doing way fewer games, and found this really helped me get back into enjoying it.

I get the temptation to make a big statement, but I'd seriously suggest seeing if giving yourself a break and/or cutting back the amount you do might help bring back the enjoyment. It definitely did for me.

I'm not really looking to make any kind of statement, I just feel that my time in refereeing might have come to it's natural end. I'll keep my options open, retain RA membership and maybe one day give it a go again but for now other interests and commitments are coming into my life.

Absolutely fair, that "statement" comment was perhaps more directed at the OP who talked about boots and whistle in the bin. It's perfectly OK to feel drained at the end of the season, but for me, working out a better balance of how much I wanted to do was much more fulfilling than I think just leaving it altogether would have been.
