Think I still count as "new" with only 8 games done!

How do people handle added time and calculating it?

At the moment I've been stopping the watch if the ball goes miles out or during any longer stoppages like injuries or fouls that lead to bickering.

Then I just blow on 45 and 90, but wondering if other people "eyeball" it by assessing how much to add and keep the clock going or something else?

Interested to know!

Most wear two watches. One runs continuous. The other is a stopper and a starter that way you know how much you've added as well.
The other is to use a watch that does it for you. At the moment I think the options are refsix on a smart watch and spintso.
I have a casio rft100 but they have discontinued that now. Which is a shame as it is a great watch.

I have 2 watches on. Both start at the same time, I stop 1 for stoppages then re-start it. Refer to my other one for remaining time and use this to feedback to players who want to know. Then when that time is up, I refer to the other for added time.

I used to use 1 watch, stopping it, then re-starting it but it opens yourself up to criticism at the end of the game when you can't call time, on time and can't say how much is added.

The biggest problem doing what you are doing is forgetting to re-start it. We've all done that and then we're into the hands of the gods

We have now all done this. After 11 years for the very first time i forgot to start my watches at the beginning of 2nd half 😂😂
Thankfully it was just a friendly.

Just guess... all this stopping/starting is just a distraction. Approaching full-time, how many subs (x30s), how many times has the trainer been on (x60s), any other considerations? Done. Simple. Undistracted. As long as you can recite the stoppages if anyone asks, you won't be far out

This is reasonably OK in most cases, but not bombproof. I once had a game with 13 minutes stoppage time.
6 subs, x 4 stoppages for injury. I'd have been 6 mins short.

I just reference the watch when it looks like a lengthy stoppage
Like many 'newbies', I did initially use a second watch, but I ultimately concluded it wasn't worth the attention. No big deal either way. Not really sure this topic was worthy of my interjection!

I only used one watch initially and then started with a 2nd. I'd always recommend a 2nd watch in case watch 1 fails for any reason.

Had an R I lined for who predetermined added time in his prematch instructions and stuck to it. One minute first half and three minutes second half. First half was reasonable but he should have added at least another two minutes to second half.

What are your thoughts on shortening added time in second hlaf for one sided games? There are two lines of thoughts here both with merits.

As to the first, Egad!! That is someone I would never want to ref with again.

as to the second, I think it depends a lot on the level and the attitude of the players. The higher the level, the less approp to shorten. At the levels I do, I read the players. on some blowouts, the teams just want to be done, and I oblige. On others, the players are still happily and enthusiastically playing, in which case I figure they are entitled to that full amount of time to enjoy the game, regardless of the score.

1 and 3 are my starting points - it’ll be at least that typically.

And again, for reasons stated above as I’m at the lower end of the football pyramid I tend to cut the time down in a one-sided match. I’ll still play some added time, rather than blow at 90.

To add to this, what about shortening added time if a team is losing say 7-0, and wants to just be done, but them potentially scoring or the opposition scoring could affect the final standings of a league table, if positioning goes down to GD, for example?

I always add on the requisite amount that I've totted up in my head, for the reason outlined above.

I had an issue with my new Sprintso today - although charged overnight - ran out of battery mid-game - luckily I use RefSix as well on my other watch at the same time.

I would definitely use a second watch as a backup.

(note: I will be exchanging the Sprintso for a replacement - as I am sure I am just unlucky with a dud battery).

With regards to the original post, I have my 'stopping and starting' watch and stop for substitutions, injuries and when the ball has been hoofed wide of the goal and gone 20 miles past...

This ^^

Nobody really knows except you anyway. I just watch my watch for lengthy stoppages, add it on in my head and say to myself, okay, we're going to 47.30 or 49.20 instead of 45.00 on the button. :) I first started out stopping my stop watch for it years ago but quickly came to the conclusion that it's more hassle than it's worth once you've forgotten to restart your watch again.

The only time I might have been tempted to employ a different method to the one I use now is if I was being observed. You've no way of knowing if the Observer is actually timing the stoppages etc. ;)

I did actually get pinged on added time by an observer - for playing too much! We'd had a long stoppage when the ball had gone over the fence and the home team (trying to hold a 1-0 lead) claimed they didn't have any more. Stopped my watch and forgot to start it again, ended up estimating remaining time, played a total of 8 minutes according to the observer (6 by my non-stopping watch) and he reckons it should have been nearer 4 and I was asking for trouble playing too much.

Once “challenged” an assessment (as they were back in the day) over something very similar because I was the sole arbiter of timekeeping. Got away with it and all. 😂
