First Red Card

Came up on one of my social media memories that 8 years ago today, I issued my first ever red card as a referee.

Violent Conduct from the player, as he got up from a tangle he stamped on the player on the ground.

I remember calling him over, pulling the red out and promptly dropping it at his feet and then having to bend down to pick it up to show it to him! 🤣

Had plenty more since then!

Happy eight anniversary

My first ever red card was last summer for the exact same reason. It was probably my 5th game ever as well. Sent another lad off in the same game 15 mins later for two yellows in the space of 60 secs - both for dissent. He just wouldn't shut up mouthing at me.

My first, when I was twelve, was to an abusive parent at half time that I thought was an assistant coach . . . he was actually the coach's husband, and the coach was commissioner of the visiting teams district. And she was P%@#$d--but at him for yelling at youth ref. This was an 8U game . . .

My first red was for retaliation.

I was observed that day and was told that the red card, though correct, was more or less my fault as I didn't see the foul that caused the retaliation. (They did not mince words back then I guess...)

I don't even remember my first red. It feels like it was in the last century. Oh wait.... it was.

I still remember mine, 26 years ago, given to a 10 year old for punching an opponent.

My first red was in my very first game. In open play a cross came in from the left, keeper at the near post missed it completely and it was headed to a striker at the far post ready to nod it into an empty net. Defender in the middle of the goal area had a rush of blood to the head and tipped the ball over the bar - would have been a great save if he'd been the goalkeeper. It was all so blatant there were no arguments at all which might have lulled me into a false perception that all future red cards would be so easy.

Nearly 12 and a half years since my first red - in my first adult game. Made its 50th appearance on Tuesday night.
