Once again, Foden (seen it before with him) clearly fouled on the edge of the PA but tries his best to keep his feet and play on
I see this as really 'weak' refereeing that positively encourages the sort of cheating which is a blight on the game
'Safe Refereeing' overlapping with 'Very Poor Refereeing'

Clearly a foul, not sure it justifies the Neymaresque hissy fit roll afterwards when he didn't get the decision though!
I can understand his frustration. If he did a 'Sterling' and went down like a 'toddler on whisky', he'd have got the decision all day every day

Why wasn't that a straight red - DOGSO?

Milner trips him up to prevent the shot. He is last man. Going straight towards goal. Clear red in my opinion

VAR check for a penalty?! What a faff

It’s so, so frustrating. Once again he’s been punished for being honest and trying to stay on his feet.

On a related note, given VAR have checked the pen (and presumably decided it was outside, because it was clearly a foul) why is it not a RC for DOGSO for Milner?

It was DOGSO. Wonder if the VAR got so focused checking inside vs out that they didn't even consider DOGSO.

Pep is not a happy bunny and justifiably so...

Is Tierney out of his depth, has he bottled red carding a Liverpool player at Anfield or just following the mantra of "keep it 11v11 in a high profile televised game for entertainment purposes"?

Surprised, by some of the anti-referee comments on here, on a refs forum! Genuine question, if Tierney thinks Henderson committed the first foul against Silva, then Milner’s fouls doesn’t count, unless it’s serious foul play.
Correct on both statements. It takes the newbies a while to learn it's not a fan forum here. Surprised about the long time forumites.

Correct on the second statement. Though I think he gave the foul against Milner. Also it would be an easy advantage for Henderson's foul.

Yes, need to see again slowly and you are probably right. But thought he had blown for the Henderson trip.
Yes, let’s support refs at all levels. Intelligent debate of decisions is absolutely fine in my book

As a City fan watching that in a hotel bar in Tenerife after far too many all inclusive sherberts, it was clearly a second yellow. I dont know this for sure but I dont think Tierney has had many of the huge games and played it safe. I think the very best go to Andfield and give that 2nd yellow. But to get to the confidence levels of giving 2nd yellows at a place like Anfield in a huge game like this can understandably take time. But being an elite referee in the big games is getting to the mentality of giving the correct decision regardless of circumstances. Thats why the elite give that 2nd yellow imo. Tierney may well get to that level, I love his calmness (or impression of calmness) but there was another big game last year which I've forgotten where he was tentative during the game and copped alot of stick for it. I think he will get to the very top, but there is a flaw in his game to be ironed out imo.

Pep argued that a City player would recieve a 2nd yellow in that circumstance. I think that's not out of the question, but not because of any bias before people think I'm bitter or a conspirasist. It's the hardest thing to do to give a red to the home team at Anfield or Old Trafford because it gets the most attention

Great game of football and a fair result. I think Tierney will be pleased that City equalised and that takes the heat away.

yeh... I'm a bit complicit. Kicking the thread off with all that weak refereeing business. In context however, most the members will know that it's the cheating players which gets my goat. Therefore annoys me when refs oil the wheels of such player behaviour
Agreed, other posters need to chill out a bit

It is human nature really to have a reluctance to send a player off in such a high profile game but you have to get those decisions correct, it's why Mike Dean is still such a top referee, he's not afraid to get that red card out no matter the circumstance.

Agree 100%

I remember the push the PGMOL had on holding in the box about a decade ago. Mike Dean was the one Ref who was brave enough to give them as penalties as instructed. Not everyone's cup of tea but the man never shirks the decisions.

Because if VAR decides it's outside the area, it's not a penalty incident so they wouldn't even call a foul let alone DOGSO.

Er.... at risk of the fans forum strictures, apart from a penalty given early in the season against Manchester City at Stoke, I can't recall any others...

I’m conflicted on the whole Milner situation.

I don’t ascribe to the theory that a player on a caution HAS to be sent off when they commit a second foul.

In real time, it looked a foul, “get on with but that’s the last. Next time you’re off.”Didn’t look a caution in its own right. Had it been a wipeout or blatant SPA shirt pull, he’s gone.

On the replay however he’s deliberately blocked his path with a backward moving leg. It’s deliberate and a caution.

I’ll get pelters for my next comment - but I can take it. I don’t think it would have been as much of an issue had he not contributed to the second Liverpool goal. It would just have been “one of those things.”
