LIV vs CHE

The Referee Store
Wow, just wow!

How quickly a game can turn. Anthony Taylor certainly likes a red card against Chelsea, but as a fan and referee, no complaints with that one. Clear movement of James arm towards to ball to stop the ball crossing the line.

BBC reports Rudiger was yellow carded for scuffing the penalty spot.

Taylor ignored Salah's act of dissent by word and action after he mouthed off at the assistant then smashed the ball away after a foul was given against him, but as we all know, it's what we have come to expect at the highest levels.

Yup, it's a PK & RC or nothing, no room for anything else at all.

It's the little flick away that seals it for me. Maybe you can make a case that it's a natural position and he didn't make himself bigger. But once it does hit his arm, he makes sure it goes away.

AT has looked really uncertain all game to me, I think he's struggling with consistency on the Euros-inspired higher bar on soft fouls. And the Salah incident is a classic case of it being harder to justify a dissent caution when you secretly know you probably got the call wrong and the player is right!

Perfect use of VAR for me. Definitely a red card, and for the pundits to call it ‘natural movement’ shows they don’t know what they are talking about. James quite clearly scoops the ball away with him arm

If that's a handball then a deflection can never be used to NOT give a handball. About 0.000001 seconds (approx 😂) between the deflection and "handball".
As accidental as they come IMO.
The flick of the hand is a natural reaction when you want to get your hand out of the way. As anyone who has played at any level knows.

The first bullet point of the handling law pretty much sums it up.

It is an offence if a player:

deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball

Even if it's a "flick", it still satisfies the point. It's a DGH sendoff.

Christ. I thought here was the one place on the Internet that would be free of the "referees haven't played the game" nonsense...

Ah yes, god forbid anyone has played Sunday league. I apologize.
Ever touched a hot pan on a stove? Let me guess, your hand quickly flicked away from the pan? Hope this cooking analogy doesn't upset you as well

The keyword in your analogy is away. In the incident it moved towards. Even if you don't consider that deliberate, arm being in an unnatural position comes into it.

What I didn't like about the call was that AT only saw the screen for one second and that was a freeze frame of point of contact. Surly to determine handball you need to see more than just a point of contact.

@QuaverRef and @one have kindly explained why this analogy is also nonsense. Third time lucky?

Even if he was sure after that, I’d like him just to watch a few more replays at least for show and credibility

IF he hadn’t of moved his hand. Are you giving a penalty?
I agree with the penalty, and the red but only because of what appeared to be the deliberate movement towards the ball.

Intrigued to know what constitutes a yellow for persistent infringement these days. 3 fairly clinical fouls by Fabinho with no intent to play the ball and yet still no card! 🤔

Persistent is very rarely called these days, and I really don't understand why if the Premier League and PGMOL want matches to flow more. These types of professional/tactical fouls slow the game down and reward the wrong things.

I'm all in favor of wanting matches to flow more and to not give fouls/penalties for some of the ticky-tack stuff. But cracking down on persistent offenses would be a great way to make the game more enjoyable.
