Japan v Matildas

Some very friendly refereeing in the 85th.

Japanese break on the Aus goal. Aus GK slides and handles the ball just outside the area. Little or no covering defence.

Freekick only.

Covering defenders aren't the key consideration, rather that is where the closest attackers are. Over the years I've seen a lot of referees incorrectly send off for handling outside the area, but it should only be red if it denies an OGSO. It would only be a yellow if the handling prevented a promising attack.

There is a persistent and prevalent myth out there that handling by the GK outside the PA is automatically a red card. (Just imagine--we'd have to send off the GK who accidentally caries the ball past the line while punting . . . .)

The last touch is away from goal, but given the attackers position it seems that wouldn't kill the OGSO

Found this as a past thread...

There are a few in there that are not red. Videos like this don't help busting the myth that every keeper handling outside the PA is a red.
I agree.
The ones that were straight red were, at least to my perspective, pretty clearly given for DOGSO by handball.

what some players/pundits/coaches need to understand is that outside the penalty area, the goalkeeper is just another player..

I agree some would not be red, but I noticed the vid didnt show the red given on each play. The ones I saw red looked like Dogso.

I think most in that video are red as it was either the keeper blocking a shot with their hands or a player having the attacker's attempt to knock it past the keeper being illegally blocked. An example of one that shouldn't be is where the keeper catches the ball just outside the area with no attacker really close to him.
