Recording yellows when it’s Raining heavily

Hi. How do you guys manage to write down the cards, sin bins, substitutions etc when it’s raining heavily? I mean the team sheet or he match card would probably soak up so much that you won’t be able to bite down anything? So how do you guys manage it?

@newref
Are you mining information regarding refereeing for a dissertation or similar?
I'm seeing a pattern going on!
Lmaooo certainly not. Just a new ref and passionate. I was thinking the weather is going to be so beautiful over the next few months 🤪. So I thought I’d ask u guys how you prepare in such circumstances.

ahahaa I like that 👍
There's some solutions on Refsworld, or there's some 'rite in the rain' products available on that South American river website
If you get team sheets and transfer all the names to your notebook before KO, there's very little writing to be done during the game. Just noting caution/dismissal codes... and the dry(ish) book is straight back in the sky rocket

True indeed. That’s exactly what I was just thinking. I should note down all the names for my own record including numbers to help identify who’s who. Shouldn’t take too long. After that not much to write as you said.

After a game in which my game card got so thoroughly soaked I couldn't write on it (not usually a problem here in Southern California), I bought a simple water proof pocket notebook and space pen from Amazon that I keep in by bag and use when it rains. Can literally write underwater with them.

Transferring ALL names from team sheet to notebook is an essential chore
Nothing worse than having uncomfortable spelling exchanges with a player/official who wants you out of their site (sorry.. sight!)

Easy, I don't caution anyone. :p

Actually, I find in weather where it is chucking down at grassroots the players tend to behave and try and get on with the game because it's horrific and they just want to get it done with and go home to a nice radiator.

So far though, my notepad has survived the weather. I have a hardback folding notepad, the type you can get on Amazon etc, it's a Sondico and they're usually cheap crap, but I like thier notepad. The paper is on the inside of the wallet, so it should remain dry, you just need to be particularly quick with the writing etc if it's hammering down. Otherwise, the more waterproof cards might be a better option.

For the worst conditions (and I’ve reffed in a blizzard) I have a little plastic wallet to protect the match card in my pocket. Moving the card to a back pocket (when ref) also limits the soaking in a downpour.

Best trick though is when you get the card out in a gale, hunch over with your back to the wind!
