Aussie A-League ref transfers to England

The Referee Store
Why has he not gone straight into the top group as he is a FIFA ref? Surely if he has reached that standard he should be reffing in the premier league or am I missing something obvious.

Someone on here will know better but as Englands top are employed outwith the FA, he will need to effectively apply for a job, rather than a simple transferring of grade/membership. This also involves a position being vacant too

Perhaps because he has a university research position - maybe doesn't think he could be a ref full time for SG1 AND carry that out?

I understand you can only ref whats in front of you but he is a FIFA ref so should be of the standard to re four top division. I understand the lack of opening and the uni bit.

Will the UK government class refereeing as highly skilled? SG2 is classed as an employee.
Might be an interesting test case.

He'll be employed by the university so that will get him his work permit I suspect. A bit surprising though as I thought SG2 was full time, so not sure how you can have a research role at a university and a professional refereeing role.

I believe Jon Moss used to do a couple days teaching whilst in the Select Group, not sure if he still does

Maybe he's researching football refereeing? ;)

I've just wasted time deleting the last 5 totally off topic posts. Stop it please, it is annoying everyone and not just mods. You know who you are, please just ask yourself when posting "does this post relate to the topic title being discussed". This went from an Australian referee moving to England to a garish goalkeeping top and therefore was clearly not even close to being relevant.

He's researching Cerebral Palsy, which hardly seems like a part time role to me.

A lot of research is coding and writing. It's not exactly a strict schedule in most cases. He just needs to get his workouts done, do his weekend match, and be available for the midweek match and meeting. Not exactly impossible.

Maybe, just from the friends of mine that have done those research roles, they seem to immerse themselves in it and work longer hours than those in full time employment.

Jarred Gillett is the best ref we have had for a long time. His resume speaks for itself. Ref of the year 5 of the last 9 years. He is one of 3 full time referees and the first one to be so. It will be our loss and your gain.

Linking this the other thread of referee salaries; IMO this guy is sticking to refereeing just for the love of it. He can take up any other profession, reach the summit of it and earn 5-10 times more money. His case is a good example of why the whole system is wrong. I am sure many more like him or better have given up refereeing for a corporate career. No point complaint about standard of refereeing if we are not willing to invest in it to attract the best. In fact paying people with excellent talent peanuts and not letting them earn any significant money other places is another big issue.

Wasn't SG2 split with one half professional and the other half not?

He'll probably do well over there. I've always thought he's been a subscriber to the 'referee presents the entertainment package' school of thought with refereeing (that is to say, don't expect mid-field decisions to necessarily benefit smaller teams, though he'll usually get the critical decisions right).
Despite that he is one of our best referees.
A number of years ago he took a GF and put down a controversial penalty which decided the game. All the camera angles showed it to be the wrong decision (attacker took an air-swing running after a ball and fell over).
What caused some consternation is that his girlfriend at the time was an employee of the club who benefitted, so there was some question over whether there was enough 'arms length'.
That aside, some time later another camera angle came out - but wasn't really shown on any highlights so a lot of people haven't seen it - that showed the attacker had his heel clipped, which moved his foot across as he planted it, which caused the air-swing, so was a foul (personally I still think the attacker fouled first by stiff-arming the defender, but that's the sort of thing that's crept into the game, so I won't blame Gillett there).

For the most part he's getting quite a bit of support on social media with this announcement, which is nice to see. A lot of people are saying it will be interesting to see if he does better overseas which would be a strong indication of there being systemic problems with refereeing here.

Can you guys please take our VARs as well? Pretty please?
