Is this really the case? As someone who has not yet gone for promotion, it seems shocking to me that things like this that are so inherent to our job as a referee aren't deemed that important - obviously the more you get promoted, the greater the expectation upon you is, but why should it be overlooked even at level 7?
 
I'm baffled why a newly qualified referee is even allowed to go for promotion in their first season anyway. It shouldn't even cross their mind for 12 months without soaking up the experience (30-40 games minimum)....Even then, it seems so easy to progress with picked out games I'm surprised any fail anyway!!

There's a difference between it being overlooked entirely and it being seen as a more 'advanced' competency that's expected to develop as referees gain more experience and move up the levels. Spotting and dealing with PI is challenging because it requires officials to not only deal with each individual incident correctly but also to keep tabs of who has done what through the whole 90 mins. Overloading early stage promotion candidates with too much to think about at too early a stage would be, IMO, likely to lead to less consistent application of the basics. PI is also easier to spot in a team of three which is unusual to have (though as the OP shows not impossible!) at lower Steps of the ladder.

All Bostick U18s/U23s matches have NARs here - in fact both leagues are massively over subscribed for officials - you're lucky to get one or two appointments a month. The unusual thing, that Ladbroke himself pointed out, was he getting one of these in the middle as level 7 - so he must be doing something right!;)

The requirement is a 'full season' and at least 20 games, only 6 of which can be [U16, U17 or U18]
I could have gone for promotion during this cycle, but I felt there was no point rushing things. I wasn't satisfied with my own performances based on inexperience, so it made sense for me to wait another cycle

Given location my guess is that this is the Combined Counties U23 (not Bostick)...it’s a development league and the ref sec gives up and coming refs or new refs to the CCFL middles to give experience. Great idea and well run league all around.

Will have to wait for Ladbroke to confirm - but the fact he used the word 'development' and that's what the U23s are called on the Bostick website led me to believe that it WAS Bostick - you could be correct, but as far as location is concerned, you certainly DO use the M25 to get to Bostick matches!

Fair points, but the idea of L7's getting middles doesn't match up with my Bostik experience. I did 2 years as a 7 and 6 only ever getting lines - and in fact, was half way through my first season as a 5-4 candidate before getting a middle for them. Now that I do middles, I almost always have a L7 on 1 line and somewhere between a 7 and a 5 on the other. I'm also still doing a combination of lines and middles for them, even when I was still a 5-4 candidate.

It was sold to me as a good league to get experience on a line and experience as part of a team on. It's certainly both those things, but it's not a league I would ever expect to see anything other than a 5 in the middle for - as you say, they're very oversubscribed with ref's so presumably don't feel the need to lower their standards. Maybe he's working on the U18 division, I don't know what their ref levels are?

ya I'm just playing detective based on the fact it seems unlikely to be Bostick and the fact we have a U23 league around here that gives 7s (particularly those going for promotion) a go in the middle with experienced 5s on the line.

He did say U23s As far as the 18s are concerned - still usually 5 or 4s in the middle. Can't remember ever doing one with a fellow 7 in the middle.
