Persistent Infringement

As has already been pointed out, it didn't have to be for 'time wasting' (unless of course, the referee said it was) - it could have been for showing a lack of respect for the game. It's not something I would probably do but the law is worded vaguely enough that a referee could use that provision if they really wanted to.

Now be honest, have you been winding him up prior to that incident? ;) All jokes aside, you are right he would be wrong if the caution was for time wasting but as it was UB and probably using the pretext of not respecting the spirit of the game! Hence the vagueness of the wording to offer referees a bit of leeway in their interpretation of what that entails!

That being said, I fully understand why he would consider it as an attempt of time wasting but since he is not supported by law to caution you as such he found a loophole :cool:

Yes but then he should have restarted with an idfk not the throw in should he not?

Tbh it was the kind of player I was, I was always borderline crossing the line with referees, I talked myself out of a lot of situations with refs, I was a sneaky player not a cheat but cheeky and slippery.

Players keep it in the corner crowding the ball every game, players kick it off an opponent to waste time in the corner every game, I booted the ball off the pitch I’m struggling to see a difference, the cherry on the cake was making me go and retrieve the ball like a naughty school boy, he lost the plot.

Anyway i instigated and controlled a lot that went on when playing, I manipulated the situation & must have done ref’s Heads in, by god am I paying for it now the whistle is in my hand, god is punishing me big time and don’t I just know it, thinking I could be just the same as a ref, it’s been a rude awakening

I would suggest if as a player your contribution to the sport was to blooter the ball into next week for no real reason, then, yes, somebody on the pitch does appear to have been seperated from normality....

Well I’ve played in front of 2,000 people as a 16yr old against Watford’s first team & have played infront of around the same crowd in the Jan Breydel stadium in Belgium in a youth final so booting the ball out of play to run down the clock in a Sunday league cup semi final isn’t my only contribution to football but you could be right about being separated from normality, I’ve got a new born baby and I’ve decided to be a referee, I feel far from normal at the moment :D

Shows a lack of respect for the game maybe?

I don't know, I find it funny imagining the 'ave it scenario you just painted there. :)

I don't see how you can punish this within the laws of the game. Something similar happens a lot - winning team ball close to touch line and defender will clear the ball off the pitch as far as he can - its a legal action, ball is in play - what can we do?

Ref: "Go get the ball"
Me: "Sir, isn't it the other team's throw?"
Ref: "Yes, but you kicked the ball out of play intentionally"
Me: "Sorry sir, but no other time this game have you made a player chase down a ball for an opponents throw"
Ref: *Gives me a 2nd yellow for dissent*
Me: *Raises a s*storm with the league/local FA*

That's probably how that situation would have gone if I was playing.

He was hypo ventilating giving me the first yellow & telling me to get the ball, had i of kicked off it would have been a red without doubt & he would have had his excuse then going down the descent route.

Hey I’m struggling to learn the laws now let alone then I just took the yellow & got the ball.

Also, not sure he has any right to make any player go and fetch a ball back. I'd simply ask for the other match ball to be used whilst someone, anyone, goes and gets the other.

I’ve done it, all be it in schoolboy football.

Much more effective when a 15yr old kicks the ball away (when out for a throw) to make him go and get it, than give him a yellow card

Are you describing a situation where the player kicks the ball away after it has already clearly gone out? I think that's an okay way of handling that situation. I'd still lean towards the yellow and making it very public that I've stopped my watch.

Cautioning a player and making him chase down a ball that he legally kicked while the ball was in play is a much different story and it has no justification in the laws of the game. Law 7 gives the ref the tool to deal with the OP's situation by saying the ref can add time for "any other cause, including any significant delay to a restart".

".

Yep, balls gone out of play, (for throw, or perhaps a free kick) and player kicks the ball away.

20+ years as a teacher trumps 2+ years as a ref, getting the boy to collect the ball is far more effective than the somewhat abstract concept of a yellow card

I dont think the day will ever come where I would approach a player in the Sunday League after he kicked a ball whilst its in open play and say to him
"Am booking you for showing a lack of respect for the game"

I can hear their laughter already
If I was going to book a player under that particular provision (and as mentioned, I wouldn't probably be doing it in this scenario - not unless the player had seriously ticked me off already) and assuming I felt the urge to explain myself to the player, I certainly wouldn't use that wording, I'd just say, "I'm booking you for unsporting behaviour." Much simpler wording and much more familiar to/readily understood by most players.

I don't see how you can punish this within the laws of the game. Something similar happens a lot - winning team ball close to touch line and defender will clear the ball off the pitch as far as he can - its a legal action, ball is in play - what can we do?
I don't follow - you're responding to a post that suggests exactly how you can punish this within the LotG. Once again, I almost certainly wouldn't have chosen this particular option but I don't see how cautioning a player for USB under the category of 'shows a lack of respect for the game' is not within the laws.

Only if he stopped play before the ball had gone out, to issue the caution. It's not clear from the description but it sounds perfectly possible that the referee didn't decide to caution the player until after the ball had already left the field.

Anyway, this discussion seems to have got way off topic - we were supposed to be discussing whether a player could be booked for persistently being offside.

Player fouls an opponent.
One minute later same player is offside.
One minute later same player incorrectly takes a thorw in.

Ref cautions player.
Player: What for ref, persistent infringement?
Ref: No, for choosing football as your sport of choice :)
