Championship Appointments

Query from my 'fans' messageboard I promised I would pass on. Does anyone with knowledge of these things, know if the powers that be are taking advantage of no crowds to use some less experienced referees on relatively high profile games such as local derbies. Certainly seems to be the case with some QPR games this season - but that's just one club and a few appointments, so not a big enough sample to draw any definitive conclusions.

Must be easier to referees games at the top levels without fans and just wondered if anyone knew if this was being considered when making the appointments or is the theory complete nonsense!?

Thanks

I think the lower divisions are probably seeing a bit of a trickle-down coming as a result of both quite a few promotions to SG1 this season - Darren England and Robert Jones, plus the fact we're actually seeing David Coote and Simon Hooper in the PL this season despite them technically being SG1 for a few seasons now.

Combine that with the fact that the top division now needs 3 referees per match (ref, 4th, VAR) and it does make sense that you'll be seeing a lot of new faces at each level below the PL, no need to come up with conspiracies about empty grounds to rationalise it!

Don't think so, they used to use SG1 referees on most big games and derbies but that stopped a couple of years ago. Anyone deemed to be good enough for SG2 should really be trusted on any Championship game, obviously you wouldn't give them one of those as their first game but if they then impress early on why not?

There seems to be a bit of a changing of the guard as well. Until this season Tim Robinson seemed to be the golden boy, hardly ever off the TV and getting all the big games. Much less so this season though and they seem the be shared around more with the newer guys getting their share..

Thanks Graeme, yes all those reasons make eminent sense.

Its not really a conspiracy theory - and does, to me, at least make sense - must be a totally different experiences.

Thanks Rusty - no definitive answer I guess but what you say makes sense as well!

Conspiracy theory probably isn't the right term - more confirmation bias perhaps? I suggest it would be perfectly normal to see new faces every season, and it might be marginally more so this season due to the reasons I list. However once you've noticed that and made a connection to the empty stadiums, it's easy to see that as the reason rather than looking into the structure that may have caused it.

Understood - no offence taken!
