Sideways Penalty Kick

Inspired by a radical ref poll on twitter.

If a penalty is kicked sideways and a teammate runs in and 'scores'. What's the restart?

Close, but, details matter here. As long as the ball is going slightly forward, it’s totally fine. It’s only an offense if the ball goes backwards or truly parallel to the goal line. And it would be an IFK, not a DFK.
Agree!
Very interesting that the laws do not cover a ball kicked sideways!
Ball must be kicked forward in procedure.
But only an offence if kicked backwards, under offences and sanctions.

I was assuming that sideways means literally sideways - no forward movement at all. I did get the IDK wrong though. Half marks?

Makes me think about what baseball umpires say when asked about a tie between the runner and the ball. They say there is no such thing as a tie, one got there first. That's where I'm going with this rather than trying to worry about the discrepancy between the two parts of the language--ITOOTR, it either went a smidgen back or a smidgen forward, and that determines the call.
