ive just started refereeing this season doing kids on a sunday afternoon. having done a good few games im becoming more and more confident and want to get more games to get more experience. do you have to be a certain level to ref for saturday football or is it possible to be an assistant on a saturday with so little experience?

Hi Craig and welcome to RefChat
You'll need to be a level 7 referee to referee/assist on open age football. Im guessing you are already a level 7 so this will be no problem

From a personal experience, I started assisting when I was 16 on open age football, just to get a taste of adult football. After 6 or 7 games I felt ready to step up and start refereeing adult football. For my first game in the middle I had a couple of mentors there to help and advise me, giving me pointers.

I'm sure if you speak to the referee secretary of a league you are interested in, they will do all they can to help you out, they wont just chuck you in at the deep end well I'd hope not anyway.

i done a few open age games to start with but spoke to an older ref and he recommended i do kids football for a season or 2 ive now realised why he gave me that advice ha dont get as much hassle. been doing an open age 6 a-side league during the week so im much more confident with open age than i was to start with. so would you recommend i speak to my local saturday and see what happens?? l

Yeah definitely. Give them a bell and see what they say. I'm sure they'll help you out. If you feel you are ready, then I say go for it

I started doing kids football because I had to, couldn't wait to turn 16 to start on adult football.

Dont let anything hold you back Im only 19 and was unsure if I could handle the men but theyr'e not half as bad as the youth matches I do lol

Running the line is the best way to learn from the referees in the middle, hopefully they'll be the more experienced refs on that league and give you good instructions and lots of support for the whole afternoon (like I would!)

Agreed Ian. Im AR on a mens league aswell in the week and then on the Saturday I go out and put everything I learnt from the referee in the week into practice.

Quite agree.

Here the youths, or more so the parents, are much worse than any senior team you will come accross from my experience!

Did I ever run your line Mitch? I miss the midweek games at Rugby Town. Were always a great laugh.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about that!! Gonna try and get down to Oadby though and give you some abus......err support :D

Like at Butlin Road when you and Slim even got my dad to heckle!! ;) That was the same night 25 assessors were turning up lmfao!

Your old man started it, he was a bad influence for us

That was a brilliant night

Nearly as good as the dog racing at Brandon! I've got 2 footie nights out coming up - Andy Stickley's 30th at Copsewood and Foxy's engagement do at the Connexion at Ryton. Thinking of arranging a loose get-together of refs for a curry and casino night at the Ricoh if you're interested?

Drop me a mail or something with dates etc, and ill try and grace you all with my presense
We need a Rugby RA Kop reunion
