    Neil Warnock

Lol....I am stuck in the middle here with Father-in-Law an avid Palace fan. WHen Warnock got the job, I actually said to him "Well, you'll never lose a game because you're crap, it'll be the official's fault with Warnock in charge" although watching the highlights with him, I had to admit, it...

    First Game Errors...

Positioning with no ARs is always tricky, so I just try and keep up with the action, while trying to anticipate the next active area. Getting a good view is more important than where you are on the pitch. With offsides and no NARs, I always tell the players beforehand, as part of my pre-match...

    Problems with club assistant

No Haywain, there aren't playing qualifications, but it can diffuse a potential situation if said with a smile on your face.

    questions re dissent

Dictionary definaition of dissent is 'to disagree with .......' Any player who disagrees with me is risking a card.......however, they are entitledto their opinion so for me it is a question of how loaud and 'public' it is. There may not be a 'stepped approach' if loud and public enough and...

    Problems with club assistant

lol....the "I'm a qualified referee" is usually given back with "I'm a qualified player of forty years or so, and today you were a substitute helping me out, which is much appreciated, but as qualified ref, you will understand that I can only give what I see or hear"

    Couple of things

'Playing in a dangerous manner' can be used if a player puts himself at risk of injury.

    Getting between players

Avoid any situation where you may find yourself having to push/pull/hold players or where you may be pushed/pulled/held by players trying to get at each other. Step back, use a strong whistle and voice and let them sort it themselves....then deal with the discipline.

    Equipment/Pedometer Advice?

I don't mind a GPS watch, most seem to use GPS for distance now anyway, it's the actual funcionality I'm after. I know my own personality, so don't want to see distance/heart rate or wnything during a game, or I would start thinking 'need to slow down/run less/recover' etc, but would like it to...

    Equipment/Pedometer Advice?

I would like to ask some advice from you guys. I am looking for a 'pedometer' of sorts to help me with training but I seem to be asking for something that is not available. So, here's the features I would like: A watch (or similar) that will: Measure distance covered Average/max speed achieved...

    Splitting headache after game

My first sign of dehydration is usually a headache. Best tip I was given around hydration, is to pre-hydrate carefully. So while I would normally drink around a litre a day of water, on top of the usual fluid intake - tea/coffee/ food / wine/beer etc. If I have a middle on a Saturday, I would...

    Assistant Referee Appointment

So, as a referee you are always right. Married you are always wrong! Keep that 90 minute period dear to your heart, it will be the only ninety minutes of your week where you will be right!

    Debating a misconduct report

At any level, if you as referee are upset, offended or feel abused by the spectators, then you should consider putting a report in. Not just to be an a##e, but to get it in writing and on record. Think about the the guys who get this team next week, the week after and the week after...

    Deliberate Touch ..?

We have been instructed to judge whether the ball went where the defender intended it to go. Under our instructions, he would be offside - No Goal - as it was a deflection and not intentionally played there by the defender. If the defender had more control, ie: ball was on ground, he could set...

    Irritating Player

You said he was 'sub keeper' but I am reading it that he came on as an outfield player? Quiet word with him first. Stern 'public' word then a card if he persists. 'Unsporting remarks/gestures' is a good catch all for players like that. If he's counting down from 6, thank him for his help but...

Refereeing in Girls' and Womens' Leagues

'Positive discrimination' is a genuine oxymoron. Nobody has ever been able to convince me there is ANYTHING positive in any kind of discrimination and I get so p####d off when people try and justify it. Granted we need more refs, of any gender, and by all means offer 'incentives' or encourage a...

    Query over ball size

If it's stamped eith 'FIFA apprved' and 'Size 4' there's not much else you can do I guess. If not marked as 'approved' then question it.

    Heard the shout

As Ryan says, and yes, you can card them whether it is directly aimed at someone or not - Unsporting Remarks and/or gestures - should be a USB code? We have different codes here but that would go in as "Y17 - Unsporting remarks or gestures" on the misconduct form.

    Delayed whistle

If too far to see, and to be fair, many pitches aren't marked well enough for in/out to be obvious - blow for foul and get there quick without taking your eyes on the spot on the ground. Gives you a second or two to decide on pen or no pen.

    Advantage + Offside

It's a quid every time you use it.....two quid if a goal results. Lol......use it all you like and I hope it helps. Just beware of trying to count seconds - "one - elephant-two -elephant etc" You'll find your 'count' of three will change pace with the pace of the game. Three seconds in a fast...

    Handball or Not?

Doubt I'd give it....sounds like the defender has tucked his hands in to avoid handball, hasn't made himself a bigger obstruction, hasn't 'deliberately moved his hands in the direction of the ball' and would have blocked the shot wherever he put his hands. Did he gain any advantage? Did it...
