The extra official behind the goal, why does he stand on the left side?

Was chatting to someone at work and he noticed during the Euros the extra official always stands on the left side of the goal, ie the same side as the lineo. Obviously being a ref I get asked pretty much every minor details about the LOTG and he asked why. His logic being if they stood the other...

    Goal line technology

I am not a huge fan, mainly cause it cant be introudced at every level. However I do realise goals change games so that should be the thing we make sure we get right. But like the Ukraine game the forward is offside at the start of the move but then the ball goes in, so its a goal, but it was...

    Handball

Your right about only pleasing one team. No matter how hard you try to go down the middle and keep things under control with every decision you make you’ll make 11 men happy and 11 unhappy. You can have the best game ever, but every time you blow that whistle someone will think its the biggest...

    Handball

heres one I had at the weekend. Goalie rushing out, dives towards the on rushing forward who is taking a shot, the keepers momentum takes him out of the area and "saves" the shot with his hand, but outside the box. I gave a free kick on the edge of the box and booked the keeper. The helpful lino...

    Well that was awful!

I came back feeling a bit down after it, but think there was some positives and also kinda thought what really is a player going to think of the ref if I send off one of their players after 60 minutes with them 1-0 and then they go on to lose 3-1. I'm obviously easy to lay the blame with. I put...

    Well that was awful!

Oh dear. had my first competitive adults game on Saturday. A league cup tie (I was a bit nervy taking a cup game on as my first game anyways!) and heavens above ended up being a bit of a nightmare. The Good Well looking back I should have cracked down harsher, earlier. I let a a bit of...

Completed my course last night, so my application to become a level 7 has gone in!

Really pleased. At the workshop we had last night only 3 of the 23 of us there were over 18 and I was pretty stunned by the level of flack these youngster refs get. I think perhaps I've been lucky in my 10 games. But 4 people had incidents of their linesman walking off mid way through a game...

    Finally gave a yellow card

no chance Lewsy, coming home and having to fill out the report was a right pain! I wanted to just watch the spurs game!

    Finally gave a yellow card

I think now I've done the first others will come easier. I think I've been probably a bit easy in the past and now least I wont have the pressure hanging over me that i might be giving a harsh yellow as my first. Without doubt the most enjoyable game I've done thus far. I made a few calls that...

    Finally gave a yellow card

Under 17's game, striker through on goal brought down by the defender, a pen and gave a yellow. Was quite happy as it went without any real incident, defender on the floor said he didnt touch him, but I just said "sorry fella I've given the penalty, you're going to have to go in the book as...

    Gave my first penalty today

Hi Ross, I'll be fine once i get the first one out the way I'll be fine. I got super nervous before my first kids game and that was under 13, seems funny I was so worried aabout a bunch of 13 year olds.

    Gave my first penalty today

I notice a huge jump from the proper youngsters like the under 11's to the under 17's so expecting the adult stuff to be a real eye opener. I'm excited about it now, although on the day I'm bound to be really nervous!

    What do you do?

With stuff around the penalty area if in doubt I prefer to give a goal kick as last thing I want is to give a corner I'm not sure on and a goal is scored. Then rather than just coming away thinking I might have got that goal kick decision wrong I could end up walking away having cost a team a...

    Gave my first penalty today

Do you think I'll notice a massive difference moving from the younger lads to open age? I'm hoping bigger pitches will make it easier to position myself to keep an eye on everything. But I think there will be alot more blowing of my whistle! I'm really looking forward to it, although nervous at...

do you do youth football at all Glenn?

    Gave my first penalty today

at the moment just youth, but signed up to an open age this week. I thought kids would be good for getting used to it and also was my main motivation for getting into refereeing as there was a lack of youth league refs. But what I'm finidng at the moment is there is hardly any banter. Some of...

    Gave my first penalty today

sometimes its tricky to treat them the same. I mean doing kids games you can be pretty sure that you'll have them crying due to injury at least 3 or 4 times a game. So i think in that sense its hard to treat them as adults when you get that kinda thing making it glaringly obvious they are not...

    What do you do?

I'd stick with a corner. I've never come across an attacker willing to give up a corner. But once I've made a call I stick with it. I think otherwise it'll make me just look like my decision will be swayed with a bit of moaning.

    Gave my first penalty today

I would only give a penalty if the handball in the area is deliberate. If a shot is rocketing towards goal and hits a hand then I dont think its fair to really punish it. The penalty I mentioned in this one there was a scramble in the box, one lad was on the floor and as the shot was taken his...

Hand ball in the box - how strict are you?

that was one of the two things we was told at the end of our refereeing course - No surprises Its better to give dodgy offside or freekick than to give a dodgy goal.
