Penalty or not? Clip attached

The Referee Store
Goal keepers challenge:
- out of control = check;
- dangerous = check
- endangering the safety of a player = check
- ball in different time to tackle = check
THEREFORE, must be OK!

There is no more obvious RC.... Pity, he did not also book the full back for the reckless challenge 3 secs earlier.

Penalty - interesting decision. He was very quick on the whistle, not too much thought involved.

Looks fine to me. Clips him on his left leg as he's going to kick the ball, then again on his right as he's going down

Red card is text book at @lincs22 says.

Pen is actually a great call...at first look I didn't like it but in slow mo he takes out the left leg. Defo pen.

Watching it at highest resolution, he doesn't touch the defender's left leg - it's the right heel that's clipped as he goes for the ball. It's just a question of whether the defender was careless, or whether it was just incidental contact and they both went into it equally.
I'm increasingly thinking though that since the attacker committed first, then it can't really be 50-50.

Not convinced on the penalty at all. White is sliding in to retrieve the ball and putting himself between the ball and the Red player. It looks to me as though, White is airborne before there's any contact from Red. Personally, I think White is more sinner than sinned against.
Also, consider the player reactions. The nearest White attacker is not* even thinking penalty, he's off after the ball to regain possession. The AR hasn't flinched because he doesn't seem to be expecting a whistle and the Reds go ballistic instantly. Compare that to the Reds' reactions on the dismissal.
Nowt wrong with the referee's angle and distance from play but I'm not 100% and therefore, I'm cutting the grass or, possibly awarding a DFK to Red.

I'm with @Yampy on this - my first instinct was a DFK to the defending team, the attacker has clearly gone off the ground first to try and stretch for the ball. I could be persuaded that this was a 50-50 and playing on would be the right decision, but I just don't see the defender having instigated contact here.

I agree, no penalty and rather DFK to the defending team. RC was spot on, clear SFP.

Sorry sorry - really embarrassing I had red as the attacker in my mind. It's a defensive FK. It's white that clips Red's left leg and or dives in first for sure. It's never a pen.

Awkward.

The way I see it is that white lunges for the ball, and does so safely. He is always in front and commits before the red defender, which is often enough for a foul - but given that he had lost his feet anyway, I don't think any careless action by red (if there is any) would have impacted play, so no foul (and we can't tell in the video which player actually kicks the ball).

Any thoughts on my reasoning here?

For some dumb reason I'm on a soccer forum in my state and somebody was whinging about the decision - it's funny seeing the facebook page where people are talking about it like this absolutely absurd decision pulled from nowhere. While I disagree with it, I can completely see where it has come from and I think it just falls more on the side of 'harsh' than 'utterly ridiculous and made up'.

Of course, the FB page I linked to is from the red team ;-)

Disappointing, of course, to see 7 players run up and mob the referee in response to this decision. I remember being taught when I started to not back away from arguing players as it shows weakness and invites more argument. Funny how this is now the norm.

Although I was also taught a completely different approach to signalling penalties.

I certainly don't like the referee turning his back on the involved players like he did - had the attacker started something with the defender he would have had no idea (although the AR should be on top of it - and come on the field if so).

Red card spot on, but I'm struggling to see enough of a foul for the penalty. The safe refereeing handbook would probably say go defensive free kick there.

1) Red card - no problem
2) No decision needed. Defensive free kick would be harsh, and the penalty is even harsher. Players and the linesmen want a reaction - a big cut of the grass, and shout of "no!" and the game carries on.
