What would you do…?

happened to me yesterday… what do you reckon?

a second (identical) ball rolls onto the pitch from another game right into the middle of an attack. Two defenders believe the second ball to be the real ball, and run across to clear it, arguably creating the space for the attacking team, who score with the original ball. cue a short period of confusion and recrimination while i made my mind up…

i went for no goal, drop ball restart for the defending team, but that was less out of judicial application of the lotg and more out of ‘how can i put this all behind us quickly’ 😁

i briefly thought drop ball for the attacking team outside the box but then i thought what if they’d spent all week working on some insane drop ball restart attacking set piece and score straight off it.

what would you have done?

It’s clear in the laws under powers and duties. Second ball, interferes with play. No goal, dropped ball to the team in possession.

Crystal clear.

More, I am interested in how the ball ended up on the field… if it was deliberately put on the field, then the individual needs a very public warning, relevant card, and general show of force (AKA your game management genius;)).

Ah yes, that’s what I thought- except the ball(s) were in the penalty area at the time when the attacking team were in possession, and (I think??) drop balls given in the box always go to the defending keeper?

And on this occasion, no need for me to use my iron-clad enforcement abilities ;) as the second ball accidentally bobbled over from the adjacent game.

Key learning for me- react quicker with the whistle, then the whole goal/no goal thing would have been avoided :)
