Coaches' chatting rubbish

Game today was an U17 'friendly', Red vs Yellow.

Got to the ground about 30 mins before kick off as couldn't find it.Quick 5 minute prematch with the home coach, he says 'we don't need any cards today ref, I think being a friendly and that we need to tone it down.I tell you what any issues let either me or the away coach know and we'll sub them off. We've only had one card all season'

I told him I need the cards to control the game properly so can't say they won't be used, but if played in the right spirit will keep in my mind it is a friendly and try to manage the situation in other ways if possible.

First half is pretty straightforward, a good fast game with some good play and nothing out of the ordinary.Yellow score 2 in the last 5 mins to go in 0-2 at HT.

Only issue on the pitch is Red 2 who feels the need to kick anybody who goes past him late.Nothing excessive but persistent.I'd told him during play 4 or 5 times in the first half, then 2 more early second. Second time comes with an additional 'next time it's a yellow'.

At the next goal kick I edge towards the coach 'red 2 is very close to a caution' que false amazement from coach who says to red 2 'I don't know what you've said but apparently you're close to a yellow card'.

For the next 5 minutes each time the ball goes out of play I look to the coach expecting to request a sub.Nothing.

Sure enough Red 2 can't resist a kick as somebody goes past him, this time bringing him down. So I bring him over and caution him.

Had to caution Red 3 for a real nasty tackle too, verging on a sending off.

Imagine my lack of surprise when the coach comes over after the game asking not to put them in.

No chance.

The Referee Store
Company i used to work for had a team in the local Sunday League, one day my manager said "Could you referee a friendly i've organised i will pay you as per the going rate" I said to him "Yes i could do that BUT i will treat it as a normal match using cards if necessary, and if i caution/send off anybody from either team i will send the reports in"He replied "oh! its only a friendly i don't want all that." Needless to say i didn't ref the match....... Lo and behold two weeks later i am given a match with his team and my depot boss was the goalie and i nearly sent him off at one point.

7 offences and no caution. There's friendly and there's friendly!

Oh yes,the attacker had a habit of making sure his momentum carried him to within a few feet of the goalie i could tell it was intimidating.... at one point actually got within inches of keeper(my boss) so keeper with both hands on the ball pushed the attacker in the chest but not forcefully, he didn't go down but walked off..... i blew the whistle and approached the keeper and said "If he'd gone down you'd be off" then i asked him to calm down he said "But Mike he's winding me up" I replied "Its ref to you". In the morning he said "would you really have sent me off?" I replied "Of course i would!"

@Brian Hamilton in fairness not one of the original sly kicks resulted in me blowing for a could, it was literally a nudge as somebody went past with the ball.

Had it not been a friendly card would've come out a lot sooner though.

Maybe, just maybe, if you'd blown and given a free kick on one of them, you might have stopped the rest?

Perhaps.

But at the time every time it happened the opponent was away with the ball so would've caused more issue to draw it back and get all the 'we had the ball and we're happy to play on' issue. Plus I don't think it would've made any difference, literally as I blew for FT and a player went past him he did the same thing, right in front of me and already on a caution.

If I were in the same circumstances I'm not sure I'd have done a lot differently, other than perhap give FK at the first and caution on the last one at half time.

From this you've learnt that you must take anything the coach says with a pinch of salt.

Referee the game as you always do. If yellow cards are needed, then you have no other choice.

I also agree with Brian - very lucky to get away with so many fouls...
