One of the first things I learnt at the beginning of this journey was; if the pitch aint right, there won’t be any football played. Obviously, this weekend saw a host of games across the country postponed due to the snow (below is a photo taken of a pitch near my house) - as a player I would have been quietly dreading the end of season onslaught – Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday fixtures, nursing of grass burns and the decent possibility of being hospitalised by a cricket ball. As a referee, I’m rather relishing the evening run out… Continue reading...
Football referees on national top level will all appear in their new outfit the next weeks. Brands made all some new referee kits for the 2012/2013 season. First on this blog: the German top referees will all be dressed in the Euro 2012 Adidas outfits, sponsored by DEKRA, a comany ‘providing safety, quality and environmental protection across many sectors’, as their website says. If you know the new referee kit in your country, please let me know. Referees are Peter Gagelmann (Bundesliga) and Benjamin Cortus (2nd Liga). Continue reading...
‘Referees in the media’ will be published at the beginning of the week on the Dutch Referee Blog and provides remarkable or interesting quotes and links to articles worth reading. “After the match we change clothes, fill out the match form and send it via iPhone.” International referee Danny Makkelie from the Netherlands on the modern way of sending the match report in the weekly section on the Dutch FA website. “It was a real shock and probably the most disappointing decision of my career.” Graham Poll about missing the Euro 2004 in Portugal. “The top two is the same every season, of course.” One of the players in the Scilly league on group of islands on the south-western tip of England. The comptition contains two teams who play each...

And all these years I’ve studied and tried to apply the offside law! It used to be a bit easier some years back than it is now. What with being in an offside position but not being offside, and being active and not being active, it’s all very confusing at times. Then a player might look onside but the ball rebounds and he’s offside now because he was in an offside position earlier! He used to be offside if he was level, but not now. He could at one time be played onside if the ball touched an opponent as it was passed towards him. A mate of mine says it’s easier to understand a solicitor’s letter than the offside law! And suddenly we hear that it’s not complicated at all. I’m not sure who said so, but some bright spark has decided that...
This is the last quiz of our season and is based on the 18/19 IFAB Laws of the Game (should be same for 19/20) - dedicated to our finals series games which are knock out games https://form.jotform.co/91899275738883 As always, you will see your score once you submit. Slow stuff all-in-all for refereeing or at least I thought so. Week 14 Absolutely swamped in the early part with studying for back-to-back exams that I didn’t have any time to think about refereeing or football whatsoever then. At the end of Week 14, our team travelled away for friendly match in the big city. I travelled as the team manager along with them. It was an affair for a lot of behind-the-scenes organisation as the two game times had to be finalised and we had to search for a replacement keeper to keep the game on. One of my friends filled in there and I took him out for dinner as a thank you after the games. It was a full day’s commitment but a lot of fun and interesting to see our team put to the test with our first...
Something that has come up this past season has been the pre-game net inspection. I don’t mean the very first time when it’s done during the pitch inspection. That’s the real one. I’m talking about when the referee crew splits in the middle of the field and runs to check the nets before taking up their position. This one is for the show. It was recommended to me, as a referee, to ensure that my assistant referees knew how to do a net check with the appropriate mechanics. This seemed like the perfect opportunity for another project for me to undertake to demonstrate the procedure. Here’s a first-person simulation of a net check. And the perspective from the penalty spot. Steps As you arrive at the net, have a quick glance to...
Referees in the media will be published at the beginning of the week on the Dutch Referee Blog and provides remarkable or interesting quotes and links to articles worth reading. “Behind our mistakes, there is nothing: it is a mistake and then we turn the page. The referee and our association are like a kite: the more headwind there is, the better and higher we fly.” Marcello Nicchi after the moment he was chosen as the president of the Italian referees. Australian A-League referee Shaun Evans. Photo: Refsworld / Anita Milas This would have been the hardest decision of my life so far! The thought of giving up 4 years as an assistant referee on the A-league panel to pursue a potential career as a referee on the A-league was a massive...

Name: Carlos Salcedo Age: 20 Hometown: Bogotá Started refereeing: at age of 16 Carlos Salcedo Who do you think you are (as referee)? “Carlos Salcedo is a referee who always is learning of the others. To give you a bit of a teaser/backstory, have a read of Third Blind Mouse’s piece on this situation. https://thirdblindmouse.wordpress.com/2014/03/12/dogso-h-or-offside-i-cant-decide/ People may think that the laws/rules of sports are simple. This scenario can show just how mind-boggling a scenario in football can be. I thought the natural thing to make this clear is to draw […] Continue reading...
