In the dressing room: now in the referees changing room in the Ricoh Arena of Coventry City Football Club. But today I should say the City of Coventry Stadium, because the building is hosting the women’s bronze medal match at the Olympics and International Olympic Committee does not allow sponsored stadiums. Thanks to ‘LeamDavid on Flickr’ I can show you where referee Jenny Palmqvist and her assistants will prepare for the match between Canada and France, today at 13pm (GMT). If you have some photo’s of an interesting dressing room (could be your local one)...
As a former Premier League Assistant (1994-98) and Football League Referee (1998-2004) Lee Cable, now a National List Assessor and Regional Referee Coach, has much experience and wisdom to impart. The advice he gave us at a recent meeting of Kingston Referees’ Society was relevant to all levels of the game. Pre-Match Preparation • Know the Laws, including Interpretation and Guidelines • Be fit enough for the game you’ve been appointed to • Deal with admin efficiently • Look good: kit and personal appearance Selling Decisions Ideally, there are no surprises, with nobody saying, “What was that for?” Effective communication will enable others to understand your decisions. • Confident body language • Clear, positive signals • Use whistle...
After this Saturday when England no doubt struggle to draw against Switzerland, there really is a lack of football this summer. Well not really. As during June we have the Uefa U21 Championship in Denmark. Plus in July the Copa America. Just seen this video via Soccerblog that has been put together to help promote it. Continue reading...
In the referees dressing room: now in the referees changing room of the ADO Den Haag. It’s the club in the city I live in. Referee Azzopardi and her Maltese team check the pitch at ADO Den Haag. Two weeks ago I published the interview with Maltese referee Esther Azzopardi. Shortly thereafter she got an appointment for the match between ADO Den Haag ladies versus Rossiyanka from Russia in Uefa Women’s Champions League. We met in person at the stadium, which was really nice. I also got the chance to see the referees dressing room and the inspection of the pitch by the referee team. Thanks to the press officer I got some high quality photo’s of the referees dressing room. ADO Den Haag referees dressing room: the shower. ADO Den Haag...
A lot of what happens on a field during a game falls under the heading of player management. It might be the communication of why you've given a particular decision or it might be the conversation you have with a player and his captain at the obvious rebuke stage of the stepped approach or it might be as simple as the checking off of a substitutes name as he joins the game. Player management is no excuse for shirking your responsibility to apply law, especially for mandatory offences like failing to respect the required distance but it is your key to earning higher club marks. This means that if the assessors are picking up on things that don't seem to be completely correct in your games, then the love from clubs might save your season...
So in rather a completely unexpected but pleasant surprise, the new Laws of the Game is out today. Ordinarily it comes out on July 1st but they released it early in order for it to be in effect for the FIFA World Cup. The new Laws of the Game don’t take effect for any running competitions now ordinarily but would for any starting after today. Nice new shot of Bjorn Kuipers (NED) smiling. We don’t have too many of those cover photos. It will be interesting to see what games he gets this World Cup. Minor changes all in all pertaining to approval of headscarves and a stricter mandate on slogans on clothing. Here is the memo of changes which makes it easier to identify the precise changes...

This Sunday is the last day of the premier league season and we have that rare treat of all games being played on the same day. Everything is pretty much wrapped up, however there is the chance that if Arsenal and Chelsea finish level on points and goal differnece nad goals scored, we will have a play off for 3rd place. Is that the most stupid play off ever, I do hope that it doesnt happen as I am sure someone will have the idea that we should have play offs to decide who wins the league as they do in Rugby Union. I know they had them in Holland but they have less European places so it does make more sense. I would rather head to head records come into play which would then see Chelsea finish 3rd. Anyway the appointments Chelsea v...
An interesting Laws of the Game question for you after an incident in the Turkish competition. A second ball entered the field of play, but did not influence play. The ball was picked up by Kasimpasa defender Ryan Donk. He … Continue reading → The post Donk stops attack by throwing extra ball appeared first on Football: Dutch Referee Blog for match officials. ‘Let adversity be your calatyst to greatness Lucas’, is what referee Adrian Skeete tweeted to Lucas Leiva from Liverpool. That motto has brought the referee from Barbados on the international refereeing list. This is the third part of an interview by Dutch Referee Blog with him. You can read part one and part two on this blog. How do you think of goal-line-technology? “With the game changing on a constant basis, with new technology being used to create lightweight balls, ‘techfit’, aerodynamic clothing for players, nutrition and training providing intensely high fitness levels of players; I believe it would benefit football referees greatly by introducing technology into the game.” “Although this is true, we have to draw the line...
